            Evolution is a constant thing...

Every martial art must go through some form of evolution if it wishes to be relevant.

Most effective arts today don't spend too much time teaching you how to deal with a charging cavalry man swinging a saber because that's simply something most of us won't have to face unless we happen to be in Afghanistan or Mongolia. They may still teach it so that if ever people in the USA started riding horses instead of cars and started carrying swords, you'd at least have the curriculum to work on. But most modern martial arts deal with empty hand skills, knife, stick and gun because those are the possible threats that most of have will have to face in the modern world.

Look at the skill sets displayed by the current generation of BJJ Vale Tudo fighters as compared to those in Gracies in Action. "Cross-training" is a part of the natural evolution of any martial art which wishes to remain relevant. How many stories have we read about the birth of different Kung-Fu styles that began with "A met B, fought B, got his ass handed to him by B and either i) learned from the experience, modified his style to reflect this experience came back and beat B, or ii) asked B to teach him and incorporated what he learned from B into his current style and became a better fighter."? This is cross-training at its most basic level. It's been going on since Neanderthal A realized that it was more efficient to hit Neanderthal B in the head with a stick or a rock rather than with his bare hands - Neanderthal B either learned from the experience or died.
