  • homemade grappling mats

Has anyone ever put together a homemade grappling mat? me and another guy from my class are thinking about doing it so we can get together and grapple more often. the cheapest way i've found so far is to get a lot of carpet pad and lay some carpet over it. It wouldn't be anything fancy but it would be good enough.

Just wondering if there would be a cheaper way to do it. Cheap carpet padding runs 1$ for a 3x6 piece and I could probly piece the carpet together for about 20 dollars. We're planning on having a mat that's around 12x12.

That sounds pretty good duck tape is nice also cover your carpet with duck tape and you won't get carpet burn but you've got to do it right or the duck tape will just peal off.

I put together a homemade set-up when I was getting started with bjj. I pieced together a bunch of carpet pad with carpet on top from scaps my dad was going to get rid of. It wasn't pretty but it worked ok and definately helped my game having a place I could train anytime. You and you training buddy should give it a try.

If you plan on not getting any rug-burns, then make sure you use
        lots of duct tape.

here you go try this getting the carpet and padding probably about 50 bucks and then get a 15x15 tarp and cover it tie it underneath lie a wrestling ring does and thus no duct tape needed

My instructor mentioned recently that he would like to move the school to a new building. He also runs 2 websites and a publication, and wants to be able to do everything in one building.
If he is able to find a suitable place, he said he would make keys for all of us so we could come in anytime we want to workout. That would be cool because he has very nice mats.

Mats at Toys R Us? I will be there!

As regards putting carpet pieces together, why not have a rubber backed mat at the top put face down, then your have a rubber surface to train on? Just a thought.

                          homemade mats

ok, I did this can can honestly say this was one of the best "fast mats" I had seen.
1-make a frame with 2 by 4's or 1 by 3's the size you want the mat to be
2-by foam (this is the expensive part as the denser the foam the more expensive it is) and fill the inside of the frame with it
3-by carpet (remnet cheaper of course) and lay the carpet over the foam upside down and staple to top of wood frame
4-lay tarp over upside down carpet and again staple/glue/velcro/tape over top of the rug and on to the wood frame

the mat I made cost about $1200 Canadian dollars and was about 15x12 the mat never caused burns or anything.

if you want a good tarp that keeps mildo etc from forming buy it from a marine shop, the stuff boat seats are covered with, you may have to tape or sew pieces together to fit such a large surface....hope this helps

You could be more traditional and stack the foam or carpet in a square shape (12 x 12) or so and then stretch the canvas over the top and use wood to form the border(over the top of the canvas ends) and then sandwich the canvase between the floor and wood border.

I know this is not a good explanation, so I'll work on it and repost later... sorry.
