You get what you pay for....

At Marcelo's school you do get what you pay for. I've been short on time due to school and work, but I'd definitely train there if I did have time. Like I've said before...it's a good environment to train in and I never got any attitude from other students. People were just eager to train and learn. You learn alot even if you can pay for one class a week. Take notes and review. Good luck!

Marcelo came down to our school a few years ago to do a seminar.

Marcelo is one of the most knowledgeable teachers I've trained with.

I just recently heard a story about how Marcelo got his black belt. It was said that Marcelo didn't compete in any BJJ tournaments, yet he was a part of the famous and very successful Carlson Gracie team that was the strongest school in Brazil. When Marcelo was a brown belt, he entered a tournament,(maybe from peer or instructor pressure) and won it. Then Marcelo was awarded his black belt. It was said that the only reason why Marcelo competed was so that he would be promoted to black belt.

Any of you Marcelo students should ask him to confirm if this was a true story.

Marcelo is a walking encylopedia of Jiu Jitsu moves. He was the head instructor at Carlson Sr.'s school for many years before coming here to the US.

If any of you have a chance to train with him, you'll be in for a treat

          I hear ya...

Pricey but I think it's worth it. You will find him at both schools, but the Tacoma school is the main one where you will find him most of the time. One of his purple belts (who I think is a good teacher) usually teaches the beginner classes at the Seattle school but non-beginners can attend the regular classes. You will find Marcelo at the regular classes, but I've seen him at the beginner classes too. I recommend calling for more detail if you need it. Sometimes the day classses are nice because there is a smaller group, but the beginner classes provide the foundation that is crucial to your development.

One thing about the Tacoma school is that it's also a karate school so instead of rolling on regular padded mats, there's only a hard rubber floor. It'll make a man of you !!

How long will it take me become a regular?

And since I cant join regular classess, that limits my training time to much less, which makes the price seem even higher.

Jared - I wont be going to the tacoma school. I live in greenlake.
Do you happen to have aim, or aol jared?

                    Hey Fighter...

RE: your advice for short people.

You said if you're still growing, then lift low reps & high weights.

What about if you're in your mid to late 20's and are short & weigh 130lbs?

Just to let anyone know that's interested, Marcelo's school in Seattle has moved. We are now at West Seattle Allstar Fitness... Marcleo isn't back from Brazil yet so I'm still teaching for him. Marcelo is sending one of his black belts in March to help until he gets back in May. Our classes have been pretty big with all levels from white to brown. Come by and check us out.

Since you're just starting out, focus as much as you can on technique. Never try to "muscle" anything - it will only work against you later on.

Once things start clicking after the first month or so, you'll find certain holds more applicable for you. Guys with longer legs usually have better guards, and some nasty triangles. Shorter, stockier guys are more compact and just plain tough - when they ball up it's like fighting a fire hydrant.
I'm assuming you're on the leaner side - this means sharp forearms = nasty chokes. You won't have the luxury of using smothers when you're on top of your opponents so you'll be using speed and positioning a lot to constantly throw your opp. off guard.
I cannot stress learning the technique of not only the holds but positioning as well in the beginning. It's just like chess - once you know how all your pieces work, and you know how to checkmate your opp, it's time to deploy the actual strategy of winning.

Good luck and most important of all - have fun!!!

                            Best regards,

I've been to Oslo and trained at Marcelo Yougi's academy there. You should be able to find links to scandanavian jiu jitsu clubs on the net. He's got a few purples there that have some SICK technique. Marcelo is a Carlson Jr. BB I believe. He tapped me out so quick I felt like I didn't even know jitz anymore.
