  • What Art should I take??? BJJ or San Shou/Sambo?

Hey I'm new here. Anyway.... I was thinking about taking San Shou and SAMBO at one gym or BJJ.

I went to 1 class of the San Shou and it was pretty alright. I saw some of the SAMBO, looked like Judo throws into submissions.

I haven't experienced any first hand BJJ but I know a lot about it from tapes and TV and it looks pretty interesting.

I can't take both becuase I don't have the money to spend on two schools and also scheduling makes it difficult as well.

Lemme know your opinion on my options.

    BJJ

    Brazzilian Ju-Jitsu!

BJJ is definatley more benefical. They say 90% of fights go to the ground.

Learning BJJ is a great art. I read a storey once about a BJJ family, They were all in the late 60's+. Any way the would take on boxers, wrestlers, streetfighters etc. from all around the world and win, in NO RULE BARRED competitions (I MEAN NO RULES)

    Amazing

    Definatly go with BJJ

I have a chance to train with Marcos Santos (East Coast rep for the Machados)

its either that or Sambo and San Shou (chinese kickboxing).

I was thinking that Grappling/Striking would be better than just straight BJJ. I do want to get into BJJ but maybe not right now?

      what are your thoughts???????????????

Definately BJJ. If you had the chance to go to Muay Thai that would be cool, but San Shou neah.
Dude check who dominates NHB events BJJ or Sambo or San Shou?

          BJJ

BJJ, if you find a good school will incorperate some striking techniques any way.

This is what I'd do if I was you. Buy: Tao of Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lees Fighting Method Vol I, II, III, IV. All of those books are written by Bruce Lee. These will give you the all the striking you need. Then go sign up for BJJ.

Learn to incorperate both. They say 90% of fights go to the ground. Ground and Pound.

Since this is a BJJ forum I wont diss BJJ too muchbut 90% is probably an exagerrated figure. Either eway I love BJJ to death but I really want to get a head start with striking first and Sambo gives a good base for further ground fighting arts. I dunno tho. I am taking them to fight in the streets. I don't want to rely on just ground techniques.

I'm going to ask about the BJJ and the Sambo. If the Sambo they teach has a lot to offer then I'll stick to that for a lil bit until I get a good base.

I heard Sambo is very leg lock orientated which is very well complemented with BJJ which ic as more of a arm lock/choke style.

BTW I love BJJ too death and even if I dont take it in the future for sure, FUTURE BLACK BELT MAYBE??? ahaha I hope so

              Good.

              Good, a fellow streetfighter.

If you really want to learn Sambo do so. Anything that will help you become a better fighter is worth it. So do it.

Let me know how it turned out anyway OK.

              Bye,

i'm not sure if i'm doing this right but here it goes.if you have a chance i recomend that you try some of the freestyle systems that exist.{bayless JJ,pancrase,etc..}many of these systems offer a great balance.

You CANNOT learn proper striking and the standup game through friggin books or videos.

And going to the ground in a street confrontation is bad. They can pull weapons on you or could/probably have friends around to stomp your face in. If your in it for vale tudo, by all means a BJJ base is pretty solid to begin with.

For all street confrontations, you need to run. And if you cannot you need to create DISTANCE by any means and THEN run away. Not close the distance with grappling.

Otherwise, try both out and see what you like better. Whats important here is what you enjoy doing more.

Kool my thread is still going on.

Anyway this is going to sound stupid but the majority of fights I get into are challenges. Therfore its totally 1v1 or "1d". Each side brings like 20 heads and no one pulls anything out because both sides are packing.

I know it sounds immature and whatever but this is how it is.

I assume you will be taking classes at the ny kung fu and kickboxing academy?

With our 3-class online special you get a free pair of gloves and 3 one hour class of New York's premier kick boxing program. Check us out here and start seeing results almost overnight!

it is a good school. I have taken a few classes there. I have watched many of their tournaments. You will learn a lot. Oleg Taktarov has given seminars there. They do know there stuff.

But you cannot compare their grounwork to that of bjj.

People in NYC don't go there to learn ground work. They go to one of the MANY bjj schools. The BJJ schools focus on groundwork. The bjj students have more students to spar with and the students they spar with are more proficient in grappling than the nykk students, so it is a self fullfilling circle.

The nykk students know enough to prevent most takedowns, and prevent or at least stall most submissions for a short time. They will get submissions on the untrained, but hardly ever on the trained. The instructor at nykk will disagree, but a marcos santos student with 3 months bjj training only will beat a nykk student of equal weight with six months training in a submission match. The longer each trains, the better advantage the bjj student will have. (in a grappling match)

I trained with Marcos Santos before when he taught at anderson's martial arts (a jeet kune do school in the midtown 30s) He is a FUN teacher. He is a good teacher. If you learn bjj from him, you will most likely be able to throw your untrained and somewhat experienced opponents to the ground.

No one says you have to follow them there. One good hard throw to the sidewalk and the fight is most likely over. If you want to continue the fight, then you could always stomp on a stunned and downed opponent. You need no extra traiining for that.

Try a free class at both schools. See what art you like best. See which teacher you like best. Which school is more convienient for you. If its a NY winter and a freezing rain is pouring, will you really travel to the school? Which is cheaper? Which school has the friendlier students?

                      Its your decision.

                        Good Post

Well I started at NYKK, I think developing striking is essential. I had my second class, sweated like a mother.

Well I like BJJ a lot and I think it is a very very worthwhile MA but right now I don't have the time for it. In the fall I'll be going to school/work/training. I thought about what would be better for the street. I am a light guy and probably get thrown to the ground more often then others so I wanted some ground work but I also don't want the sh!t getting knocked out of me. Since NYKK had a grappling program and I could take it with the San Shou I thought it wouldn't be too bad to work on that until I had more time to maybe join a BJJ class.

I heard good things about Marcos. Also I looked into Renzo's school. Many BJJ is freakn expensive as hell!!!! Renzo is 250!!! Fabio Clemente is 250!!! Marcos Santos charges 100 (student price).

Are their any other schools in NYC that have more cross-training???

                          GrdStorm

These are similar to the fights I get into. Only we dont bring 20 people usually only 3-5. Streetfights are differnt to street confrontations.

The streetfighting I was talking about are actual organised NHB fights. The only rules are NO WEAPONS. These are the only way to test real skill. Because there is no rules protecting you. This may sound savage to you guys but its not. There is alot of honour in them. Were not punks on drugs fighting. Were Martial Artists testing there fighing ability.

Bruce Lee was in fights like this all the time all the way up to when he was 19 and was sent to America. Check this sight out.

And i do know in a STREET CONFRONTATION there are alot of factors you need to take into consideration. And of course you dont go to the ground in a fight.

As for books, you use them as a base. Im not saying read the book and youll be ready. You need to go deeper than that

Then its not a street fight. It is a vale tudo match, nothing more.
