TKD does work!

Im a 5th Dan in Taekwondo and I can tell you from experience that it does work. It is not a Mcdojo art! It has proven itself just as much times as BJJ has.

tkd isnt a worthless art to train as it teaches you differnent techniques which you would not learn in another art, it gives you flexibility and very good kicking power and skill, however is you were to go into mma competitions you would need to know more than just tkd you would have to have another art to accompany it. i think this is also the same for grapplig, you need something to back up the grappling if you want to win.

USELESS! (to me, anyways)

When I was 13, I took TKD for 6 months, at my parents' urging (I wanted Judo, but they thought it was silly ) and I can honestly say that I hated every second of it. The class hated me as well, because I'd laugh at them. It was like a sign when I walked into the academy and the first thing I saw was a 7-year-old kid with a black belt. I still clown on that to this day. We NEVER sparred, we did nothing but forms. In 6 months, I sparred 3 times. And it was an ATA academy, even....GAY! Of course, they made my parents sign a year contract, and they had to buy out of it after 6 months because I would not go.

no black belt, but some kids I started nearly the same time as were green belts...go figure. I'm sure if I had applied myself in the 6 months, that I could have been "that good," however, I was too busy trying to convince the instructor to let us spar. I HATE FORMS!

Here we go again with another forum ripping apart TKD. I don't know what TKD you've been watching, but it sounds pretty far removed from the art I study. I think TKD gets a bad name because it's an easy target, mainly because of the political BS between all the various factions, but also because all most schools teach is tournament fighting (both ITF and WTF). Well here's the funny thing, proper TKD isn't about pulling off flashy high spinning kicks and getting a black belt in two years (it took me 5 – and it was second time lucky), but about utalising all the body's weapons to apply maximum damage. However, like all arts there are limitations to its range, so many Korean masters also cross train in Hapkido which fills in many of TKD's gaps very effectively. Here in the UK, I've seen loads of cocky tournament fighters who are very good at holding out their legs and throwing multiple flicky kicks, but wouldn't stand a chance against a hardened street nutter, but that doesn't mean the art is wrong, it's just how they've been taught it.
