Hazel is the wrestling coach from El Camino right?

Rickson may have tapped Hazel with the arm lock, but Rickson was in serious danger in that match. That forearm Hazel had on Rickson's neck was serious. Rickson is lucky that Hazel eased up on the neck.

I know Rickson is very good at what he does, and maybe if that fight were NHB it would have been different, but Hazel had Rickson beat. There was absolutely nothing Rickson could have done to escape all of that weight on his neck.
Rickson's throat was about to be crushed, and Hazel eased up and paid for it.

Rickson is still a credit to the sport and a fine competitor, but if there was ever a time when he was going to lose, or actually lost, it was that fight in GIA1.

        Bailsong,
I agree. Hazel certainly had some good power on that
choke. Rickson seemed to cling very hard to Hazel in the guard which tells me he felt Hazel's power. Hazel's lack
of submission work perhaps led him to believe the choke
was not effective so he let off. This is yet another example
of what I said previously- His opponent's lack of skill(in this case submission)to capitalize on the position. There
is alot to be learned from that tape. Even from Rickson's
        opponents.

I don't agree on Rickson's submission to being an armlock
however. Rickson is only wraping his arm around Hazel's
to secure the shin choke across the neck for leverage. Rickson's hips are not elevated and Hazel's arm is not extended to the point of snaping. I have practiced this
position many times and have had my opponent do the same
to me, and every time I felt the pressure on the neck.
Notice after the match, Hazel immediately shakes his head.
This to shake off the cobbwebs so to speak from the choke.
This is a normal reaction. Nowhere do you see Hazel
reach for his arm after "it was about to be ripped off?"
        (as was posted previously)

Looks like a perfectly executed ARMBAR to me. Trap the left arm, bring shin across neck, hips up. Actually a beautiful armbar. He does hold his elbow after the fight.

The pain was obviously from his neck, because his first reaction was to grab his head and give it a shake.
It looked to me like he was just scratching an itch or something. If my arm was about to be ripped off, the last thing I would do is start shaking hands with every guy in
the gym with a Gracie gi on using the same arm.

                David A,

                Thank you for your post.

                Adobo,

                Magandang armlock sa Rickson.

                However,

A few years ago I was picking up my girl from El Camino College and happened to recognize Hazel. I asked him about the fight with Rickson and this is basically what he said.

"Those guys are very good. I give them full credit. When Rickson and I fought, I had him. He was breathing was in serious danger, I got scared when I saw that eased up on his throat and then he tapped me"

It wasn't in those exact words, but I could tell from Hazel's eyes that he wasn't kidding. He was sincere, and humble. And the cool thing was he didn't even claim victory and stated that he made the mistake of easing up on the neck, which allowed Rickson the opportunity to finish him off.

I'm not a Hater. I give props to whoever deserves them. Rickson gets my props and so does Hazel.

The point i'm trying to communicate is that time limits force the fighters into a different game where fighting the clock becomes priority and not fighting the opponent.
Acts of desperation or the game of chance comes into play,
where in a real fight with out the time limitations, chances
are not forced upon, unless the fighter see's fit to doing so. The Sak/Royce fight is such an example. Odds are that
if this fight was out in the street and weapons or interuptions weren't a factor(in which I have seen many fights this way),chances are it would be just as long or longer in time duration. No, I am not saying most fights
end up this way, or that there aren't any other factors, but there is always this possibility when two high classs fighters clash. The time limit rules forces "reality fighting" into a game or a sport.Who can score the most points, who can impress the judges, who can beat the clock(?).

Good grief. First, Rickson submitted Hazel with an armlock, not a choke. Second, no matter what Hazel may have said, Rickson was in NO danger from that forearm-on-the-throat "choke". Come on guys, that would not finish most blue belts, even if there was a huge strength discrepancy. Rickson badly outclassed Hazel in that match.

                      word

                      David a,
Exactly. Whenever someone mentions this painfully obvious fault in nhb competitions I immediatly think Shamrock vs.Royce in UFC 5. If that fight had kept going Royce would have tapped him out because Ken would have had to do something besides lay on him, and they both know that. There should be no time limit, no rounds, and no judges. A fight isn't going to go on forever; eventually, someone will win. If the companies putting these shows on think their program is too long then they should cut out some of the crap they put in instead of fight time. It would make for a more realistic fight which is what I want to see.Royce states his opinion about this in an interview I read on bjj.org. you should check it out.

Can't you tell Balisong is pulling your chain? You also need to learn a few more submissions, I get that armlock quite often. The leg helps the armlock, he would not have tapped that quick from pressure on one side of the neck. Of couse the WRESTLER had dominate position at first! He was larger, heavier, stronger, more aggresive, and oh yeah, he was a wrestler! The Gracies have had many people put pressure on their neck that way, so have I and I have never tapped from it.

Oh yeah, he shook his head because of his performance and/or the submission from nowhere so quickly.
