Yoshida NEVER mounted Royce. He was in Royce half guard working a sleeve choke but was way to high up on Royce to get it, so he switched to smother technique. Royce was in no trouble and was even elbow escaping when the dipshit ref stopped the fight. Royce almost cought Yoshida in a footlock and Yoshida kept is cool and escaped. Even on the mic after the fight Yoshida admitted that Royce never tapped and offerd a rematch....
Frye was crazy to fight Lebanner under those rules.
Royce had an interesting match. He didn't get thrown cause he jumped to the guard at every opportunity..smart thing for him to do. Hope there's a rematch.
I was surprised by Semmy. I thought Hoost would destroy him.
Noriega (sp?) had an awesome match against Sapp. Excellent!
The special rules of the fight were per the Prde website as follows
Royce Gracie also gave a candid interview after the Shock Wave press conference.
PRIDE: Did you request any special rules?
Royce Gracie: ...I asked the promoters how it would be if we had the same rules as my father and Kimura fought under. No striking and only grappling. My father will turn 90 years old this October and I would like to fight under those rules as a present to him.
As to Kid Lock, I edited my message so the cotent woud be clear I suspected substance might be a non- BJJ quality but still I thought it would be good to confirm that
Grdstrom I did not say that Yohsida was great mat man I said the opposite. I did say that Mastula of Poland was far and away better then Yoshida on the mat .,, there are a whole group of judokas in Mastulas league on the mat . It does not matter that we have far better mat men then Yoshida because the reality is that the hero of the BJJ submission world lost to a Judoka who while great at the stand up game (Gracie fell to the guard every chance he got, he knew what woud happen if he stood up: good tatic in light of Yohsidas overwhelming superioty up top) has no real mat game
It must reklly hurt .. I know that because you showed such anger in your reply
I didn't get to watch it but I heard that Bob Sapp was beating Nogueira up pretty badand tombstoned him. Is this true? How Did Don Frye get Ko'd? Was it a certain mistake he made?
This is Yohsida's desxription of how the match turned out and Yoshida's own lack of mat skills, still he thought Gracie gave into the choke very easily
Some people having watchrd how easliy Gracie gave into a basic xchoke like sode jime( sleeve choke) have suggeted the term wimp should apply.. I think it is way too earlyr to use that,, maybe he could prove thrm worng by having the gutsr to figt under Judo rules
Yoshida: That's a part of judo. I went to side position but one of my
legs was still stuck so the arm lock wouldn't work. Then I worked my
hand around to the back of his head and he let me do it fairly easily.
After that, it was just like practice. I couldn't believe that he
would let me do that so easily.
PRIDE: Did you practice sleeve chokes when you were active in judo?
Yoshida: No, as you can see, my ground work is not very good.
(laughing) Lately, since the fight was decided, I thought about how I
could possibly win and ultimately, it would have to be a choke. I
practiced many other chokes and I think it paid off.
PRIDE: Was there any choke that you wanted to use?
Yoshida: I can't tell you that.
PRIDE: Is that because you're saving it for next time?
Yoshida: To tell the truth, there was a technique that I wanted to
use.
PRIDE: Should we look forward to seeing that next time?
Yoshida: If I get the chance.
PRIDE: What did it feel like fighting in that stadium?
Yoshida: I was less nervous than I expected. It was the first time for
me to fight outside and in a ring. It was also the first time for me
to fight in front of so many people so I expected to be really
nervous. Somehow I was able to be relaxed, though.
PRIDE: Helio Gracie asked that yesterday's match be declared a
no-contest.
Yoshida: I don't really want to worry too much about that. It's up to
the promoters to decide. I've done everything that I was supposed to
do so there's nothing I can say about that. …He was probably
out. I felt the power go out of him. That's why I thought he was out.
(The choke) was in perfectly.
PRIDE: So you instinctively told the referee "he's out, he's out."
Yoshida: No, I said "Didn't he pass out?" I couldn't see him and I
also didn't want to kill him. (laughing) I wasn't sure at all (if he
was out) so I had to ask the referee. However, it would have been fine
with me if we had kept going like that. As for the decision, I think
the referee had the best position to see. I knew that his strength was
gone but I don't know if he was out. If the fight hadn't been stopped
I could have continued choking him. I'm confident that I could have
choked him out.
PRIDE: Do you feel that you won?
Yoshida: In terms of the fight, yes. If there's a problem, there's
nothing to do but leave it up to the promoters. I'm just glad I was
able to get this new experience. That's the most important thing. What
will happen from here, I leave that up to the promoters.
Yoshida was fully mounted, what are you talking about Martial Artist? Just watched it today. What was Frye thinking for taking this fight? Even if Frye was to be a kickboxer he would of been outmatched. It was 40 lbs man. Shamrocks student submitted Lebanner in just over a minute with a forearm choke so Frye would definitely beat him in NHB. And PRIDE should of let Vanderlei fight Daijiri's opponent as it was originated. He would of gave him a damn good fight. He kind of reminded me of Anderson Silva.
