And by the way, I am sure these Gracie/Boztepe threats are bullshit. I know for sure that Emin challenged the gracies personally (in the video) but I never heard of any challenge from the Gracies. I just read about it on internet posts, and everyone can write that. Emin already said it on the same video(and that was a long time ago!), on the net lots of people said/say what they like, it's the easiest thing to do! I am not his student, I practised Wing Chun in an Austin Goh school. I like the Gracies, I like BJJ and Jeet Kune Do. I like martial arts! And I know that Emin is a good person, friendly and kind. Like De Cesaris, Burton Richardson, Dan Inosanto....and I never heard they challenged anyone (exeption made for Emin's tape after receiving insults and threats from some of the Gracies supporters). I think that what I heard about these Emin challenges is bullshit, created by people who like to lie and make problems. That's my opinion, I don't want to say things like "Emin is the strongest of all"or "Rickson would pulverize Emin" and stuff like that, what's the point?
The Gracies did what you said and try to get him to fight by challenging him. But what happened is what I said. How is the Emin vs Gracie B.S You said yourself you saw a video of him challenging and threatning the Gracies. Isn't that kind of contradicting? The challenge was not just some rumor that spread around the internet, Emin posted on his site that he challenged them so it obviously not a rumor. It also reached magazines which kept people updated. The UFC sent an invitation to Boztepe, no it was not a rumor, they sent it. He refused saying Rorion used to be a matchmaker so it is an unfair ground, then when they tried to get it arranged in a police department he said his brother used to work as an police advisor in another state so it would be uneven but then the Gracies said they would give him this "advantage" he claimed fighting there would be but he still refused. Those are pretty poor excuses. This information was not from internet fourms these are from magazines and other sources that are telling facts. Emin even wrote articles on how he was going to beat the Gracies and the superiority his system gave him. Remeber these are not rumors so stop calling it b.s these are facts not something made up on the internet. As for Emin being nice guy..... Well I don't call jumping your instructor who taught you everything you know is "nice" Here is the vid of him jumping his instructor http://www.bullshido.com/videos/emin-vs-cheung.mpeg Also shows something about his fighting ability.

        Hey there,
I didn't know that William Cheung was Emin's instructor......I always knew that Keith Kernspecht and Leung Ting were the ones that taught Emin, and Rene Latosa taught him Escrima. And in the video you cannot tell that he jumped Cheung, they are in a clinch facing each other and he put him down and controlled Cheung's arms....then I heard many stories, like the one that Emin attacked Cheung with a knife, or with the help of other students......and Emin said he attacked Cheung cause he insulted Leung Ting and Kernspecht(through magazines), saying that their system is no good and stuff like that....
Anyay, I live in Italy so I cannot get US magazines, can you tell me if there is a way for me to read these magazines you talk about online? I would really like to read about these challenges!

I probaly got mixed up with someone else. There were some Blackbelt magazine articles online that you could look at but they have redone the site so you won't see them in a while.

it's actually amazing how people continue to get excited by Boztepe/Cheung and Boztepe/Gracies "incidents".

I have been practicing WT for years. Lots of big mouths there, apart from some (few) serious ones (I mean people who fought b/c they work for security firms, or as bouncers). Boztepe is convinced to be the best out there. I attended one seminar of him, and he hasn't taught us anything special. The "fight" against Cheung is just ridiculous. At that time, Boztepe was already 2nd technician in WT (and considered a tremendous fighter), and Cheung a "master" of Wing Chun. Actually, the level shown in the tape is very low. The reason why that video was shown is that there was a "war" (to get more students) between Cheung and LeungTing/Kernspecht. Of course, what you get is neither WT nor grappling. Boztepe attacks the man and doesn't use any fucking WT "chi-sau" or WT "concept", just brute force; once on the ground they both suck, so that every decent grappler cannot but laughing out loud watching it.

Actually, if you want a serious practical self-defense method, you should check Geoff Thompson's stuff or Senshido. If you want to learn to fight for prize fighting, you should check Muay Thai and BJJ first. Too many wankers in WT world...

I think Emin did a lot of things just to become famous
First localy by entering a skinheadbar and and then beating the shit out of them
                Then internationaly by attacking Cheung
And to top it all challenge the Gracies

All was done for the benifit of a moviecarreer, now that he has gotten some roles, he won't react so fast anymore

As a kid he probably dreamed about being like Bruce Lee, this most likely made him taake up WC ( WT/VT what ever) too
Wit a bit of luck he can make a few more flicks and then die

I agree with some of the things said on the last posts, but I think most comments are personal opinions. I wanted to hear smth more about this Emin challenges and stuff, cuz in Europe you don't hear that much, that's all. But one thing is sure: in western countries, especially in USA, there is A LOT of talking about martial arts. Almost every school tries to get more money and fame, that's the main goal to achieve. Just look at Kernspecht: he has a vast culture, wrote really interesting stuff about martial arts history/philosophy and self-defense
and then when you look at his website or at his magazines you can see that everything is structured to sell, claiming he his system is the only true way to follow. The same for many other schools, you just have to open a M.A. magazine and you'll see that each school claims to be teaching the best system, having the best fighters and so on. M.A. are just like any commercial product, and that's just too sad. But it's strange to see that in Hong Kong, mainland China, Thailand there isn't such kind of competition. And it's funny to see that in Hong Kong Leung Ting is just one among the others Wing Chun masters, and that he doesn't have the "mystic martial arts backround" that Kernspecht built for him in the West. I've been in Asia for a while and I saw that things there are realy different. Martial artists and fighters don't try to look hard or mean and don't even want to look that way. And yet when it comes to practice and fighting, you can see these guys are second to none. And students don't challenge each other on magazines and shit like that. If there really must be a real challenge (like Yip Man used to have), there will be a challenge without all the "I'm the best" bullshit and the media boasting insults that we can see here. That's why I don't take most of these threads or challenges seriously, even the Emin ones. And in MY OPINION he has been used by Kernspecht for quite a bit, and thit is the reason of his leaving the EWTO. And I have a question: if Emin's system is really no good, why would the FBI and the marines request his teaching?

                    Tee Sok,

to answer this last question first: FBI, Seals, GSG-9 (germany) and other corps have tried Boztepe, Vunak, Rickson, plus other well known fighters and/or instructors. None of these elite (or also non-elite) corps has adopted just one system as the "official" one (there are those who claim so, in order to attract people to their schools).
Boztepe can fight. But as I wrote before: 1. in his EBMAS schools you hardly fight, and even "hard" sessions where you put your skills under pressure are very rare (I experienced it for about 2 years so I think I can speak of it); 2. This aura of "invincibility" is very suspect, as the only Boztepe's real fight to be watched is the one against Cheung.
Emin claims to have fought more than 300 real fights with no loss. Great. Any proof? He worked as a bouncer for more than one year as he was about 20 years old. So probably he had a considerable amount of fights during that time, when he was not a WT technician, but he trained also Wrestling and Boxing. So, that's hardly a proof for his WT efficiency.

Oh, and a third point: he, and his senior students, study BJJ under Machado brothers. So, that's a novelty since some years ago he claimed that WT didn't need any integration...

                      Boztepe is full of sh*t

Emin has made open challenges in the past and failed to follow through when confronted. His claim to being the greatest fighter alive while insulting MMA as a sport, and the fighters that the sport produces, has gotten him into hot water on multiple occasions.

Both Bas Rutten and Remco Pardoel have accepted Boztepe's challenge and had Boztepe tuck tail and run. Ruttens answer to Boztepe's challenge was to Boztepe's face. Boztepe claimed that there had been "a misunderstanding" and wanted to have coffee with Rutten to "work it out."

Boztepe is a weak a$% b*t@h and needs to be recognized as such.

Yes I knew that these elite corps asked other instructors to teach them (especially Vunak), I just wanted to point out that if they requested his teaching there must be a reason. And I didn't know that he studies under the Machado brothers! Well, I guess he realized that it's not the martial art itself that makes the difference, but the martial artist. I think Emin has understood that this tough behaviour leads nowhere and has grown beyond that...also because he left Kernspecht!

                          @ DJ Coldfusion

I read something in the past about the "Rutten incident" and the "Pardoel incident"...
To be fair, I don't know exactly what happened before the two dutch fighters paid Emin a visit. I mean, I don't know whether it was, in both case, really a misunderstanding to be resolved by talking. What is sure, however, is that in this last 10 years Boztepe has never fought -as far as I know- against tough fighters. But maybe I missed that....

Remco didn't actually visit, his leg was broken at the time; however, Bas supposedly did. Remco told the story a year or so ago on the sherdog forum. He has a very low opinion of Boztepe and Boztepe's claims in general.

I read that Frank Schaefer, the EWTO instructor fot Holland, denied on his website that some "hardcore" dutch fighters went to challenge Boztepe and forced him on his knees and spat on his face...saying that it was "a fairy tale". And lots of people still believe that...I just say this to show you how real the Boztepe challenges are, that's all.
