  • Judo as a Martial Art...

What does everyone think of Judo? Effective or not? Or perhaps its only useful when taken with another Martial Art to make it more complete?

  • #2
Some of the techniques are very effective indeed, but a Judoka must stay clear of many of the tournament tactics. For example, he cannot afford to grab his opponent and wait for an opportunity to throw, as he will get kicked and punched. He cannot call a hold down "broken" just because someone gets him in the half guard etc.

But on the whole a god Judoka is strong, fit, can talke punishment and has the throws and submissions to dish it out.

People in the forum have suggested me to consider Judo seriously, because of the throws it has. I am sure a good Judoka can give a nightmare to anybody that dares to challenge him. A takedown or a throw to cement is no joke. Now, if u want to cross train, u just got yourself a good arsenal of Judo techniques. Keep it up people...

I forgot... Some of the moves in BJJ are equal to Judo in some way, so u might want to consider BJJ. Even some BJJ dojos practice throws too. But again, I've received suggestions on considering Judo for the throws. To even cross train a striking art (Kickboxing, Muay Thai) + BJJ + Judo... We just post opinions, so if you're considering Judo, jump in the dojo and give it a try. But keep your eyes close to BJJ just in case... Later...

              I like it

I think Judo can be a good art to learn .The throws can be very good self defense if used properly . I also think you might want to get some strikeing skills from somewhere and pay attention to what throws and joint locks are practical so you know wich ones to use if need be . Remember that most forms of modern Judo are taught as a sport but that doesnt mean it cant be applied elswhere.

Judo can be useful if you're very patient. I've taken some judo classes, and for every throw that's useful, they teach you 3 others that aren't.

I've tried using Judo throws while doing BJJ and they just don't work, as many include exposing your back.

That being said, I am still probably going to join the Judo club at my college this fall in addition to taking BJJ. The atmosphere in judo seems to be more laid back and it only costs $15 for 3 months. Hell, if I could perfect the basic throws, it would be worth $15 to me.

Judo is great for all the basic throws such as O Goshi, Uchi Mata, the Seoinage's, etc, but most Judo throws are too fancy & risky and therefore not worth knowing!

At my BJJ club we do Judo throws for our clinch takedowns, so that's all that's neccessary as far as throws go, but with most Judo schools they get bogged down with variations and too many Gi-specific techniques for the sporting aspect!

Also with Judo they use too many pins and hold-downs that you'd never get on somebody without a Gi, so for the ground BJJ is by far the greater option, so if I were you I'd do BJJ, but insist that Judo throws are used to get it to the ground first!

                    Thx guys...

BJJ has had many positive praises so I'm sure It'd be worth checking out. However, there are no schools near me at all. As for Judo, I went to a class yesterday and really enjoyed it. I liked the fact that you can pretty much get stuck in straight away, and the grappling was pretty good too.

As for its effectiveness, Ill have to wait and see I guess - I'm consider joining as its pretty close to me and fairly cheap. If anything, I guess Judo gets your body used to being thrown around the place!
