  • Boulder Colorado now has a Reality Based School

Boulder, Colorado now has a Reality Based School. Beginning October 1st at The Mountains Edge Fitness Center I will begin teaching a brand new martial arts program. For kids we will focus on basic self-defense and progressive martial arts along with Bully Proofing and Stranger Awareness. For adults we will work on reality based self-defense using a holistic approach. Using scenario based training and verbal and physiological structures. We also use a progressive martial arts program with some Reality Based Concepts and Tactical Self-Defense, Filipino Martial Arts, Groundfighting and some modified versions of JKD and other martial arts. So anyone who wants come down for a two-week free pass and give us a try is welcome. We only focus on self-defense so......if it doesn't work we don't use it. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday. Kids classes are at 4:30 and Adults classes start at 8:15 PM.

    Stay safe and take care.

        Brent,

        Is your training full contact?

        Thanks,

        Spanky.

P.S. Joe takes a dump just about everywhere he goes.

Yes and No. We do full out simulations once a student has progressed to that point. I don't throw people to the lions so to speak. We build up using emotional climate training and isolation drills. We try and make it a gradual step.

Yes and no. You gotta love that response.

What you're saying is that yes, after training, your students participate in full-contact sparring/simulations?

Exactly......we don't do full contact as in a sparring where you square off for rounds and such. Instead we use scenario based replication. We have Tony Blauer High Gear Suits and I have had the pleasure of working and corresponding with him since 1996. When we do isolation the contact is about 80%. Some of my students will go harder, but the amount of power has to be just enough so that your training is safe and your partner doesn't need assistance to get to work in the morning. I guess it's all relative. I will go as hard as some one is comfortable. I have to be careful because I have broke my nose a few times, my hand a few times, top of foot, my wrist. You know what is sad about that is my students never get hurt. LOL I am a big advocate of realism not ego. I do have a website. With kids we wear uniforms and such but the material is the same just more age appropriate. With adults it is strictly self-defense using gross motor skills, verbal structures, phsycological concepts all in an adrenal state using scenarios.

Thanks for the link to the site. I'm a big fan of people like Rich Dimitri, Geoff Thomspon, Sammy Franco, etc.

A lot of my training includes full out scenario drills too. Good stuff.

I am big time influenced by those folks. In fact I just e-mailed Rich today telling him how great I thought their program was. In fact I give them credit in my curriculum for being inspirations to our system. I also put them (Sammy, Rich, Tony) down as required reading for my students. I think that Tony, Sammy, Rich and Demi, Geoff are all very ahead of their time. I collect their videos and go to their forums to lurk all the time. Since I am a big fan of theirs I basically incorporate a lot of concepts they do into my program along with my own experience. I have been fortunate enough to have crosstrained with a lot great people so picking up concepts and ideas from them was very natural. I definately give credit to the source for getting me going in 1996. I have been lucky enough to educate people and experience first hand how behavioral and combative concepts work. Besides it is so much more fun........I used to be a Mcdojo guy and had a wake up call. I flew out and met Tony Blauer and haven't looked back since. I sold my school so I could teach reality combatives only. It's funny how things workout but with out a kick start from these guys I wouldn't have questioned myself and what I taught. So now I research and train and expand on what I hold as my core values from these wonderful teachers. Were very lucky to have people that stick to what they believe at the cost of commercial success. I feel that in the end they will have a greater impact on Martial Arts then the next 4 year old black belt or boardbreaking champion. The truth is pathless.

Sekkinsendo is the way of close quarter fighting. I just basically kept rank from my other style. To be honest I don't wear my black belt when I teach. The Sekkinsendo is what we call what we teach. My rank is for the kids not the adults. So it means little except to those that are scared of belts. In fact I would be a level in the adult class and not a belt. Sorry for the confusion but to some people its important that they know I didn't get my rank from the mail. Sekkinsendo is just a name as well (that we came up with and copyrighted). Most people want to attach an exotic name to something so it sounds official. I really wrestled with that idea. Trust me, when I was in TKD I stopped testing at third degree and let even my students pass me because I was so unhappy. Imagine your students passing you because you thought it was pointless. I had two students that were ranked in the top ten and I was their junior. I just thought it was silly because I couldn't swallow what masters where saying was the way. So don't get caught up in my fancy pants certifications. I am a show me don't tell me kinda guy. Some of those I really worked my ass off for and other certifications aren't worth the paper they were printed on. But none the less I worked for them.

Sounds great. THAT is what I'm talking about!

You have an admirable list of associates. Have you researched Burrese, Quinn, or MacYoung? I think Quinn is relatively close to you down in CO.

I like Marc "animal" MacYoung.......I think he is right on the money. I see things a little askew from Peyton Quinn. I think his adrenal training is good but some of his akido movement is little bit much for me. With that said I still have a lot of respect for him. The other fellow is somone I am not sure of. I will have to check him out. I am fortunate enough to have a million books and videos (so my wife says) to use as research. I have a core goal and I just work in tools and tactics to meet that need. If I doesn't work in an adrenal state with a non compliant attacker I don't bother. The same goes for our kids program. Even though they wear uniforms and belts the message is the same. Tool development.....Tactics....adrenal training....role playing.....test and evaluate. Maybe not exactly like that but damn close........
Their is a lot of great instructors out their that definately need recognition. Unfortunatley they are not ending up in magazines to get exposure. Example the Black Belt Magazine for Womens Self-Defense leaves me so upset I shake....no kidding.....I read it and dwell on how poor some of the information is for weeks. Reality Training is the new Tae Bo for those magazines and more people are getting a volume of poor information. I drone on LOL...

                            Thanks
