you dont need to take any ones word for it. rent ufc style tapes and notice who wins top 3. hint: its not the karate guy. those who win are the wrestlers or brazillian jujitsu stylists who have good boxing or thaiboxing skills as for the traditionalists when they start winning ufc style tournaments ill read their website and ill train with them this is not to say that a traditionalist who does a lot of sparring cant manage to beat the average street bum but the key here is the sparring not the often ridiculous techniques they show you the average karate dojo is just trying to take your money...go to your local boxing gym and join your highschool wrestling team both arent expensive if you want to learn how to fight.
Apparently you missed the part where there is only one MA instructor in town, hence the advice to check it out and then make a decision. There really is nothing wrong with Karate, provided the instructor is knowledgeable and really is who he says he is.
Traditional martial artists probably do not train specifically for competitions like the UFC, which wrestlers and BJJ'ers do. So using things like the UFC as an acid test may be valid to a point, but it does not really prove anything.
Kata or forms is very integral part of Martial "Art". It teaches you balance, coordination, correct techniques, speed, focus, patience, concentration, discipline, confidence and beauty of the movement when mind and body is at harmony as you'll realize ONLY IF YOU PRACTICE WITH motivation and deligence.
I'm an Ex-Marine. In the Marines, we walk/march and move in certain way that is challenging at first. We have to Drill. Drill is lining up and marching certain way, turning about face certainway, saluting certain way, swinging arms certain way, carrying weapons in a certain way..etc..It is all about Discipline. My point being...would ppl ask why? Is this going to win a war during a battle or firefight j/b you learn these forms/structures in the Marines??? I say yes. Kata is much like this. Also, I have noticed through out many years of practicing martial art, I noticed majority of the ppl who dislike Kata is very or moderately lacking what I told you earlier in my 2nd paragraph.
P.S. The reason why Martial Artist break board? It was part of the hand to hand technique taught to a soldier incase he have to kill the opponent by breaking the armor which was made of wood in order for you to get to the flesh. This of course is "just in case" he doesnt have weapon or lost weapon during battle.
Hope I helped you a bit, friend.
Enjoy your Art.

I did track down one guy via the internet that had a website for his wingchun class, I gave him a call and it turns out that he had abandoned his website and given up teaching to a class (he taught for 8 yrs) but he did offer me some private lessons. I asked about training with the wooden dummy and he said "Oh, you won't start on dummy forms for 18 months". Does that sound reasonable to you guys? Personally, I cant see someone wanting to give up their saturday mornings for a year and a half to teach me (me and a couple of friends). I will go and meet him anyway.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone who posted.
BTW: I am a (fat) web designer. I notice that a lot of you have websites in various states of completion, if any of you need any help I would be happy to return the favor. I am used to teaching absolute begginers. I have a lot of web marketing knowledge if any of you are frustrated when it comes to making money from your website. Drop me a pm anytime.
