How much for a custom DVD?

Taking my credentials into consideration, what would be a good fair price to charge for custom DVD's?

Credentials aside, I think you should charge based on content. How much time, how many people, and how many topics are covered per DVD?

Some topics of training require assistance, whereas some do not, right?

Some topics, say self defense, may require 3 or 4 people on camera.


If you charge $80 an hour, is that going to be linear for say two hours?


How much time do you put in each topic? Say if I wanted a DVD to cover:
1) Focus Mitt Training
2) Thai Pad Training
3) Functional Trapping

Would I get a three hour DVD? For $240?


And given you have a black belt in TKD, do I get a discount?

Whether it involves 3 or 4 people, the price would still be the same. There could be three topics on one dvd...the charge will be based on one hour of professional instruction. So yes, at $80/hour a 3 hour dvd would cost $240.

You would probably deserve a TKD discount but I'll promise not to teach it...that way I won't have to give discounts!!

Yea, I agree, but I'm not selling a $240 dvd's. I'm selling $80 custom dvd's with one hour of instruction. How much are private lessons at your academy? At least $50 - $100 I'm guessing. Based on that, $80 seems pretty reasonable for a custom dvd??

Well, yeah, that makes much more sense. PLUS you get to watch it over and over, as opposed to a one time seminar.

Being a cheepskate, I'm voting for $60.00. The benefits are you get to watch it over and over, but the down side is you don't get the constant interaction that makes one on one training so valuable.

I still want the TKD discount!

I would Never pay $80.00 for a custom DVD. How much would it cost on VHS? I you charging so much because its on DVD or what. VHS actuallu cost more to make than a DVD. ANyways my point is I would never pay 80.00 for a DVD period.

I said $60 because i am from Australia and $US60 is like $AU110 (approx)
And on top of that there will be postage right?


The benefits are however good, unlimited replayability so it might be worth more that $60. Its cheaper too if you have a training partner and you go halvies!

One thing I think your failing to take into consideration is the ammount of disposable income pertaining to your potential market. Most of the MA people I know, myself included, spend the bulk of our disposable income on class, seminars, training equipment, gym memberships etc. Asking 80$ for a DVD even a custom DVD is going to cut off most of your market. For example I spend 60$ a month on class, at least 50$ a month on seminars and spend the rest of what ever money I can on equipment (which isnt a lot). Now I realise that 110$ (not including gas and all the other incendentals, I drive 50 miles one way to class) a month isnt a great deal of money in the grad scheme of things but it reperesents a sizeable chunk of money coming out of my disposable income (all the money left over after my house payment, car payment, food etc). And as the custom part of your custom DVDs are you going to film live one hour sections for each customer or are you going to archive a bunch of lessons and just burn the ones the customer wants on to a DVD and mail it of to them? This makes a real difference because if its a personal lesson, filmed just for me, to my specifications, than I think that justifies an 80$ price tag.

Yes Mike, each dvd will be filmed for the specific needs of the person ordering the dvd. I won't be making copies of the dvd's I send out.

I do realize there isn't much money in martial arts. How much do you guys pay for private lessons? The going rate is anywhere from $50 - $100. It wouldn't be worth finding a demo partner, someone to film, spending an hour filming, uploading the tape to computer, burning a dvd, and taking a trip to the post office for any less than $80. That is what would make it worth my time.

That doesn't mean a thing if no one wants to pay $80 for a custom dvd. If that's the case, I just won't make them, although I have already received some orders.

Soon, I'll have some dvd's for sale that are not custom made and they'll probably be priced at $29.95. They can be sold a lot cheaper cause they're not customized for one person.

Thanks for the input and I'd love to hear some more opinions.

If you are going to make each video to the specifications of each customer than I would say that 80$ is far too little for all your time and equipment costs.
