  • Taekwondo isnt that bad....I think

Hey I have been reading many of the posts and being new to the board and also a practitioner of Taekwondo my self I find the negative attention to Taekwondo a little disturbing. I can say that it has increased my fighting ability substanially compared to what it was before I began taking classes a year ago. Before I began taking TKD me and my friend Ben were always into martial arts (though we didnt know shit about them accept the corny things we seen on T.V.) but we would bare knuckle sparr in my backyard all of the time. We were 15 then so it wasnt like 5 year olds just slapping each other around. We fought because it was fun and we were very even all of the time, it didnt matter who got in that one good blow that sent the other to the ground for a while we always considered each other as equals. But then about 2 years after we had started this backyard ass kicking cerimoni I joined up in TKD and after I reached my first sparring belt and really got down how to really use my power, speed, and balance proficantly he wont even fight with me anymore, so the best I can do is pad up and try to get a little bit of a challenge out of the black belts at my TKD class. Im not saying im the badest mofo to ever grace the arts but I am saying that TKD tought me great balance, increased my accuracy, and my speed. I do not think that it is even close to being something the normal man would use in a street fight and truth be known if I came out with a 360 crescent kick in a fight I would probably end up on the ground in a bloody mess, but, I can say it has prepared me far more than I would be if I had never had it at all.

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GONNA SAY..

IT'S LIKE IF YOUR FIGHTING SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING AND U DO..

LIKE ROYCE GRACIE.. BEAT FOOL BACK THEN..
AND EVERYONE KNOWS SOMETHING AND IT'S NOT SO EASY...

U CAN'T TELL IF YOUR FIGHTING LEVEL INCREASED UNTIL U FIGHT SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SOMETHING..

MUAY THAI IS A GOOD STYLE TO TEST YOURSELF.. THEN U CAN JOIN WHEN YOU LOSE..

      LOL..

JUST KIDDING .. BUT TRY MT..

        yeah... good idea

I was a TKD guy myself before I switched to MT...

Big difference my friend... you'll change your mind about your "good"balance and accuracy once you spar a good MT guy....

BUT I will say my TKD training helped me make progress VERY quickly in MT ...body mechanics etc... I was able to join to the advanced training group after a month!
I could spar (and dominate sometimes) guys that had done this for over a year ...

So.. yeah take a trip to a new MT school... dont tell them you know TKD though... unless you WANT them to go extra hard on you!

          I wish....

I wish I could join a MT school, from all of the posts I have read it seems to be one badass art. But the problem is, I live in a very small town and TKD just recently became available here where I live only three years ago so I will probably never see a MT school until I get out of High School. But, I would like to read up on MT, if any of you have any good sites about it I would appriciate you throwing the URL up here. Thanks.

What about a Western Boxing club, or Judo? Are they available in your town?

              TKD to MT here too.

TKD training really complemented MT, take up boxing in addition to TKD, def.

Be careful not to lump ALL TKD into the one basket - not all TKD schools practise a tournament-oriented style!

I am currently training in WTF TKD, but my instructors are professional martial artists and readily admit that traditional and sport TKD both have their weaknesses. They have incorporated Western Boxing drills for hand techniques, and BJJ for grappling/groundwork.

TKD is excellent for body mechanics, and truly has scientifically advanced kicks that are continually refined. Even Bruce Lee realised this, getting Jhoon Rhee to help him with refining his technique (and that was 30 years ago).

MT is hard-core, and very effective! I have sparred several MT guys and got a real shock on my first shin check (limped for a week)! Mind you, the MT guy also got a shock when I followed a left hook with a jumping back kick to the armpit!

Tournament TKD is good for tournaments and not much else except cardio. But not everyone is training for tournaments . . .
