  • Traditional Karate

Hello, those of you who practice traditional karate.

I was wondering, since you practice so much stand up fighting, what do you do to prevent falling during a fight? Now I don't mean sport fighting (NOT point sparring)... I mean REAL fighting. That means, once you fall on the ground, the other guy will start pounding on you or get on top of you, which results in a wrestling-type fighting (not karate any more).

Falling usually consists of two types:

    1) You slip/trip and fall
    2) The other guy tackles you.

Well for number 1, I guess you would just use your breakfall techniques or rolling techniques. But for number 2, not many karate techniques have defense against tackling. So how do you traditional karate (say: Shotokan, Shito-Ryu, Goju-Ryu....etc) people prevent a tackle or some kind of takedown?

    1. u can learn how to ground fight..

if u are a good karate man, then falling and getting up shouldn't be a problem right?

now if u fall because of a tackle..

    see number 1...

questions are answered in ways that seem exact of ones natural ability to answer ones own subconscience thought.

    Trust me playboy..

      Free Falling....

      I agree with the last post. As a karateka, I cross train judo to learn how to counter and avoid ground attacks. 3 things that come to mind right away;

      1. Hit him hard whenever he comes in close, so he knows that a shoot might cost him his health. This is all timing and must be trained against shoot attacks. One slip and you are both on the ground.

      2. Sprawl out wide and then come up with a fast attack, this should neutralize all but the most experienced shoots. The key again is to make them pay for each shoot, this time, you whack the hell out of them with knees, elbows and hooks, while being careful to maintain your base until you can recover from the spawl.

      3. The real key is to avoid the grappling range altogether, as if fighting more than 1 opponent. Most of our higher kata use arm breaks, so that as each opponent attacks, you damage the attacking limb. That's the goal of Nahate training, anyhow.

Good post, lets see what develops. But I agree, to counter the round fighter you need to be a ground fighter, at least a bit.

I have only trained in a few take downs that we do from the ground using our feet. But generally we avoid going to the ground.

I can think of many counters to a tackle .. although we dont really train many counters. When someone tackles their head lowers . .. it makes it a great target for a knee or hook .. both with our without resulting in you going to the ground. In the situation that you would go to the ground I would tuck my knees into my chest with my feet up .. so I could eitehr push the person over my head using their momentum .. or push them straight up with one or both feet then draw one or both feet back and kick them in the face. I dont really know .. but Im taught not to stick to set moves everytime and to make stuff up if I have too, on the fly. I have done this kinda thing when sparing with mates .. cept you dont actually finish with the kick's/knees to the face .. not with any force anyways.

Okay.. some of you may say move away from the attacker and use striking so they can't grapple. However, what if they're big? Striking doesn't really work on big guys. Besides the groin (because not in every situation we can kick there), where else can we strike?

in my old boxing gym i was sparring with a big black muthaflower... and he was big as hell! so anyways.. he kept is neck up and when i threw a right i hit his neck.. he was choking..
i didn't do it on purpose but that's what you have to train for in boxing. keep your chin down, protect your vitals..

              what does that tell you?

Your size doesn't matter when you hit stuff that can't get swoll!

your bicepts and tricepts get on swoll, but your eyes can't ... your adams apple can't. your nut sack can't get swoll unless of course it's hot and they sag lol... but you know what i mean.. your kindney.

i'm big too but my little jiu jitsu teacher flips me like a rag doll..
but he's the only one who can. so far.. lol..

IF u box a taller bigger man you might lose... but if u mix it up you have an equal chance..

              many have trained..

              trained .. trained.. trained..

if fought alot.. in the streets, in jail, in hallways, in slums, in parties, a an amusment park.. a lowrider show, man.. there isn't a place i havent fought.. trust me it depend on your situation.

sometimes u gonna fight and u have no time cause the cops are coming or they break it up

sometimes nobody is there to save u, and ur gonna fell it...
fighting on the grass or sand is a bitch..

              *END TRANSMISSION*

I think a knee to the face when someone is moving towards you is gona hurt like hell no matter how big the person is ... faces are generally all the same size :P.

I don't think you should use your knee cause if they grab it, you'll be taken down more easily.
