They don't need a stand up art when they can convince people to fight a Gracie fight.

true, but judo went a different direction than bjj (except for kosen judo). from what i've heard, they leran it for the takedowns (bjj/gjj's weakpoint). just what i've heard.

really? i read they ignored takedowns in BJJ because "it doesn't really matter how you get to the ground, just that you do." was the attitude.

Both of you are incorrect. BJJ CAME FROM Judo. Not the other way around.

Yeah, that may have been the case ten years ago...

                      actually, i'm not wrong.

there are a bunch of ways to spell ju jistu, and "jiu jitsu" is just one of them. i know bjj didn't spawn judo. nobody said it did. judo was around a LONG time before bjj ever got started. judo was a derivative of ju jitsu (the samurai art). jigoro kano removed the techniques that he found dangerous, and formed judo with what was left.

judo focuses on the takedown, bjj focuses on what happens once you get to the ground. kosen judo is the exception, as it is nearly identical to bjj/gjj. i'm right again.

it was the case 10 years ago. nobody knew about the ground and the quality of the fighters was nowhere near the level that they are now. the gracies had to evolve with their sport. when nobody knows about the mount and the guard, it doesn't really matter how you go to ground--your opponent won't exploit his position. nowadays, it matters a lot.

If Jiu-Jitsu was the first art then I guess it started them all "Jiu-Jitsu, which means gentle art is the oldest form of martial art. It originated in India more than 2000 years before Christ. It was created by monks who could not use any type of weapons to defend their lives against barbarian attacks. It spread through China, and eventually took root and was elaborated on in Japan becoming the first martial art style. The samurai clans in Japan adopted Jiu-Jitsu as their own traditional style to defeat an opponent regardless if the situation was striking, throwing or grappling. With the passing years, they split the techniques and developed other martial arts styles, such as judo, akido, karate, etc. " - quote from RicksonGracie.COM
