  • Your views on Aikido

Hi guys. Im currently a green belt in Judo and loving it. Latley Ive been watching aikido videos that I have downloaded of the internet and been reading about it, and I would really like to give it a try.
What I would Like to know is how street effective is it? I see it users multiple attackers and totally there own momentum against themselves.
The reason I want to do it is for its gracefullness and control. It looks so beautiful. Also how does the grading system work? do you recieve belts? Also the artists that wear those real baggy black pants, do all people that practise akidio wear these or is it only for shodans?
Is there much judo in aikido? example, some of the wrist locks, and some of the throws?

thanks alot, I would also like an answer from someone that is experienced in Aikido not someone that has never actually done it and says the think they know it all.

Thanks very much I look forward to your replies.
    Scott

Ok this is a good time to tell ya about this program you guys are going to love.

go to www.imesh.com and download this program it is 2.34mb, if ya dont want to do that tell me and I can e-mail it to you or icq or msn the program.
Anyway it is a peer to peer file sharing program. It is simple as you register a username and passwrod connect and type in the search box what you want. eg."Martial Arts" you then chose wehther you want audio, video, pictures anything. so if you want videos on martial arts you select videos. The program then brings up a lits of movies to download gives the size and availability. If the file has the extension .mpeg or mpg you can even preview the movie.

This program is great and I have over 59 334mb of martial arts small movies, UFC matches, and martial arts demonstrations.

You guessed it u can use it to download mp3 and everything.
Trust me go there dl this program it is awesome.

If you want any help with the prog just private message me or icq or msn me (just look in my details), or give me an e-mail.

      thanks

This depends on the style of aikido - normally only shodans will wear the hakama - its use is to obscure the legs so that an attacker cannot identify what the legs are doing very well. was worn by samurai.

The belt system in aikido varies from style to style - normally similar to other Japanese arts, like Judo.

take a look at www.aikidojournal.com go to the video section and check out some of the vids.

Also www.aikidofaq.com Loads of videos on there.

For self defence i would recomend Yoshinkan style - it is hard work though and is the system used by the japanese elite police force.

aikido was formed at the same time as Judo and many top Judo fighters came to train in aikido under its founder Ueshiba. On Aikido Journal there is a demonstration of some big american judoka challanging a deshi(student) of the hombu aikido dojo - he is way bigger but cant do a thing! Nice!

                hope this helps.
                Cheers
                Chris

Hi Well ive trained both aikido And judo. It all depends on for what reason you want to train aikido, In my opinion for street self defence judo would be far more effective. I have used judo in a confrontational situation, But i have never felt confident enough to try fumbling about catching someones arm to put a lock on. The chokes and sweeps are similar between the two arts. As far as judo is concerned its strait to the scrap, You very rarely find a attacker is gonna square off with you in a stance, They will just run and grab you And try scrapping with you. Which is wot judo is all about, I know aikedo trained to a high level and perfected by the individual would be deadly.
At the end of the day a art is only as good as the individual who is training it, In any case you still need a veried arsenal so strikes are always helpful for utalizing distance.

The style that is available is Shinryukan Aikido, it was this guy with lastname of shinryukan that came and established aikido here. I got a awesome black and white video of steven segal its about 5 mins long and 32mb and its black and white and man it is so awesome. Its just so graceful and looks awesome. Yeah I found out the belt system is like judo it goes from 6th kyu down to shodan. Next week im going to go along to the basics class and have a go. I see that I shouldnt really have to go through breakfall practice as Im very proficient in my ukemi. Im going to have another look for a some other Aikido dojos but I think this is the only one as it is not just one it is about 4 dojos in total in a joint organisation calles A.S.C or something.

thanks alot for your help guys
