  • Gi grappling tourney (170lbs and under) with $1,500 prize

Consideration is currently being given to holding an "advanced" GI GRAPPLING TOURNAMENT tournament for 170lbs and under, somewhere around April of 2003, at a location in Georgia that is yet to be decided.

The format would be a 16 x man elimination with a single 5 minute round. It would be held in a boxing ring and winner by sub only (no points). In the event there is no submission in 5 minutes, both combatants will be stood up for a "sudden death" elimination. The victor will be decided by first takedown in the overtime period. The winner of this tournament will receive a medal and a PROPOSED $1,500.

Here is who I have, both confirmed and tentatitve:

    1. Byron Whitesides, Judo & Jujitsu, SC (confirmed)

    2. Ricardo Calvacanti, BJJ, Las Vegas Combat Club, NV, (confirmed)

    3. Marcos da Matta "Parrumpinha" (tentative awaiting contact)

    4. Edson Diniz (tentative awaiting contact)

    5. James H. Clingerman, BJJ & Judo, Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, IN (confirmed)

    6. Quinn Vallely, BJJ, Gomez Academy, MI (confirmed)

    7. Chatt Lavender, BJJ, Blalock's IMB, TN, (confirmed)

    8. Casey Oxendine, Vale Tudo, Ruas Vale Tudo, KY (confirmed)

    9. Kenneth Florian, BJJ, Boston BJJ, MA (tentative awaiting reply)

    10. John Hosford, BJJ, Pedro Sauer, TN (tentative awaiting reply)

    11. Mitsuaki Uchida, Taido, GA (tentative awaiting contact)

    12. Chris Elms, Judo, and BJJ, Family Karate USA, GA (confirmed)

I need 4 more competitors and would prefer a couple more Judoka, if possible.

Also, if there are any AMATEUR fighters that want to participate in the evenings Jacket MMA matches, I still have openings in every weight division.

    Thanks.

      That sounds really interesting.

But have you put on a show like this before? If two guys are evenly matched and the winner can only win by sub this could really take a while. I rolled with a gi against a guy I train with once and we were still going after 30 minutes, very few position changes even.

        Mr. Miyagi,

The time limit will be extended to 10 minutes with an overtime for "sudden death". If it were to be any longer, it could take all day, of which we won't have. This is the daytime portion of an all day show, which means that in the evening, there will be Jacket MMA tourneys.

I have personally been in a submission match that went 45 minutes to draw, so I understand where you are coming from. However, there is a way to have a winner in this format and it encourages submission activity, which adds more excitement.

Careful buddy, one of my old mates from the Infantry is a punk southern cop in Gwinette County! Have you cuffed and stuffed afore you can say 'good, good, good.'
