  • hockey and bjj

you would think some coaches out there would get their players into some basic bjj such as falling back and pulling the other into the guard. i know that the fights are part of the show but i think it would be useful for some of the less agressive finess players....has anyone ever seen even some basic grappling applied succesfully in hockey...

cant say for everyone or league but I play hockey in Houston and I know they will let us fight for a while standing but as soon as we hit the floor the refs break it up...that seems to be the way the NHL handles it as well, although I have not watched a hockey game in about a year so I could be remebering wrong. So I dont know how effetive learning bjj would be..good idea though

        Good in theory, but no.
        1) Ice hurts a lot to fall on
        2) The big guys protect the best players on the team--you didn't ever see wayne gretzky fighting, did you?
        3) You can't pull that fancy submission stuff while you and your opponent are in pads
        4) There isn't enough time to do that
        5) Try to put someone in the guard, and you'll end up slicing their face in two with your skate. They will in turn take their stick and colostomize you with it
        6) Most people would rather spend their time practicing to score goals than working out how to beat someone in a low probability fight that lasts 10 seconds and involves little risk of injury

            Goon squad

Gretzky had Dave "cement-head" Semenko to back him up in his old Oilers days.

What might be more interesting would be to organize an NHB tourney for Hockey players - see if any of those Russians come out with any Sambo. Instead of gis, they will have the option of wearing their jerseys.

              Thanks holte!

I love hockey and love good fights on the ice and miss Marty McSorley! he rocked when it came to throwing blows.

Ofcourse Wayne Gretsky is the greatest but he is a lover not a fighter...
I have met and spent some time with him and his family a while back and he does not like fights just hockey! that's really too bad. I would've liked to see him throw down and get dirty!
