  • The UFC.....

When you watch the UFC, most fighters seem to know either Thai boxing or jujitsu or wrestling.

But you never see tai chi, pah kwah, hsing i, or any other "soft" martial arts. And these are CONSIDERED the most powerful fighting arts. We also never see karate(NO not north american, i mean japanese, which IS more effective then american karate, and atleast has a good concept) or others like tae kwon do, kenpo.

well, atleast the winners never know these.

    so....why not?

    Because they don't work.

Alot of the fighters do have some of the styles you mention'd .. but alot of them also know kick boxing etc etc as well as karate. As for the ring you pretty much have to be MMA. Although you can probably survive pretty well on just grappling styles.

Silly Question: Because the UFC and its combatants usually suck!! The Gracies and the Shamrocks are some of the only decent ones. The UFC can not be used as a means of choosing what arts are best. It seems like the UFC is a battle of size.

Of COURSE Kungfupanda! That makes PERFECT sense! Why don't you kick some of those guys azzes for them and show us how bad they all suck? Or why doesn't your instructor? He would be doing a very noble deed. He would expose these RAUDS for what they "really" are and help all the people who are misguided by them by attracting them to Kung Fu. He would be helping them defend themselves or loved ones much better by taking them away from that silly sport fighting and educating them as to what real martial arts are...AND he would make himself a hell of alot of profit too. And before you say he won't perform martial arts for money, if he teaches, thats what he does. He'll just be sparring and it should be easy for him.

Back to reality and away from Kung Fu land(on a side note, one should never EVER use the terms "kung fu" and "reality" in the same sentence.):

The reason why you dont see these arts is because they don't work as they are SUPPOSED TO. Skinny Royce Gracie pimp slapped Minoki Ichihara at UFC 2. If anyone here follows Karate or Kyokushin then, just like me, you must have thought Ichihara was going to kill Gracie.

                  Didn't happen.

Most of these arts are based on THEORY. It should tell you something when the moment you ask someone to prove something they can't do it for shiit.

Most arts like TKD, Kung Fu, Karate etc, would tell a 110lbs man that he can disable a much larger person by punching him in the nose, kicking him in the nads and generally stop him with blows only. We now know that this just isn't the case. Yet with arts like BJJ we see proof of the opposite. We see a skinny brazilian kid named Royce Gracie choke out shootfighter Ken Shamrock in less than 1 minute. We see him take down and destroy Pat Smith. We see him choke out Gerard Gordeau and Dan Severn. All of these guys were WAY bigger and stronger the he was.

With your own eyes you have SEEN technique defeat strength and size, something your instructors have always told you was possible, but because its not striking and "kiai" you are instantly opposed to it.

Martial arts have evolved an incredible amount in the last 15 years.

Anyone here can go over to www.mcdojo.com and watch the video of Emin Boztepe attacking "grandmaster" William Cheung and tell me if you see ANY technique WHATSOEVER in that fight. It looks like 2 little kids fighting on an elementary school playground.

And what happens to "Grandmaster" Cheung? He gets put in a friggin headlock and can't escape.

                  Comedy.

Keep training your hsing i. I'm sure one day you will be a soft fighting machine capable of Dragon Ball Z like power.

I have no problem at all.

Aren't YOU the one who came out with "They suck."?

It would appear like YOU have the problem, not me.

speaking of what we've all seen with our own eyes

Speaking of what we've all seen with our own eyes. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu isn't enough by itself either! Traditional martial arts are a learning process, it takes a beginner that dosn't know how to make fist correctly or punch right and starts from the ground up and teaches them how to fight! Stand up arts teach standup and grappling arts teach grappling. No one "pure" art is complete including BJJ! I spent 3 years on the mat in a BJJ class, by an instructor who selling his tapes in the magazines. His art is pure and not once did we practice the ground and pound or a suplex or any of the other non traditional techniques we see in the UFC. So why are these BJJ practioners trying to take credit for these techniques. I'm not saying I don't practice these techniques, because I do, I'm just saying thats what goes on in a Vale Tudo enviroment. Don't think they are the same. Newbies come in here and read that and they believe it they jump on board talkin' caca about things they don't know from experience! All M.A. are a learning process. When you become advanced like the way all of you by the way you talk(or should I say write), then you train advanced. WAKE UP!
If you don't cross train then your behind the times too!!!

Amen. Those styles are garbage perpetuated by charlatans and stage magicians. Everyone wants to pretend they have magic powers. Surprise! The force is NOT with you.

Same with "karate","tai chi","tae kwon do", the list goes on almost endlessly. Why do people still believe this nonsense?

whats your problem? OH! your from new york!! it makes sense.
HEY!! I'm from NY too ! But seriously, the chance that you know a little about what works and what does not, especially in real life, is greatly increased by living in an urban environment that has criminal problems from time to time.

Because the UFC and its combatants usually suck!! The Gracies and the Shamrocks are some of the only decent ones. The UFC can not be used as a means of choosing what arts are best. It seems like the UFC is a battle of size.
Battle of size? Oh, that's why Royce Gracie abused every one of his challengers in the first few UFCs. Suck? As someone who likest to think he knows a little bit about fighting both in and out of the ring, I can tell you that any one of those men would make *insert sensei/master/sifu* their b!tch in less than 23.7 seconds. Seriously dude. It's not the same as real life, but those guys REALLY know what they are doing. Real fighting is a mix of power, technique, mentality, and viciousness. Not some chi magic.

                            Sad, sad, sad...

And speaking of sad, so was that Boztepe v Cheung video. They looked like a couple 12 year old school kids fighting over a spot in the lunch line.
