Criminals that are robbing some one will use a gun legal or not. Responsible law abiding citizens should be allowed to carry guns. If you are moving there you MUST get one of those set ups on your car that shoots out gas incase some one is trying to steal your car, it's like a flame thrower. That is really a lawless land.Last edited by GRACIEAUSTIN; 12-18-2002, 08:03 PM.

Actually South Africa isn't that bad. Sure there's a certain amount of violent crime but no more than you'd expect in any large international city. You hear all sorts of horror stories but most of them are urban legends.
Johannesburg is probably the worst though - car hijackings are rife and the central business district is pretty much a no-go area. I think most South Africans have become fairly desensitised (sp?) to the whole thing and staying aware of what's happening around you is the order of the day. Things like checking an intersection when you come to a stop, being aware of where your wallet is and what's happening in the street around are important - it's become second nature for most of us.
Got a couple of stories: My brother in law's mate arrived home and drove up his drive-way to his house. He'd noticed a car stopping in the street outside the house as he pulled up but didn't pay any attention. Two guys had followed him up to the car and proceeded to put a gun to his head and try to hijack him. The guy was a black belt in some karate style and he said he didn't even think - he grabbed the gun away from the armed guy, put it to his head and pulled the trigger. Fortunately the gun jammed and both the guys ran into the street, hopped into the waiting car and got away. This was in Johannesburg.
I live in Cape Town and the crime here is bad but it's pretty much restricted to certain areas - although it's starting to spread as we get more international visitors coming into the city with lots of money.
My girlfriend's colleague was attacked in his house by several guys with knives. At first he thought it was just one guy and tried to fight him off - big mistake, four other guys pushed in behind him and he ended up getting stabbed 18 times - the main reason they were there was to steal the guy's gun and after assulting him they made him take them to the safe and give them the firearm. Luckily the guy managed to call an ambulance and was fine.
More recently a friend of mine was in the city (Cape Town) and having a bit of a party he was drunk and looking for a club and some guy in the street said he'd show him where it was - my friend (like an idiot) followed him and the guy ended up directing him into a quiet street, pulling a gun on him and taking his watch and wallet.
I've yet to be on the recieving end of anything like this (knock on wood) but I say if you're careful and don't present an easy target you should be fine. Now if we could just do something about all these lion attacks.....
Sorry for the long post - thanks to anyone who bothered to read the whole thing.

Its just that so many Americans seem to think that gun ownership is the answer to all crime problems. The logic being that having legally held firearms makes criminals less likey to commit crime, as they fear getting their head blown off.
I'm undecided, but there you go.
