The reason why I believe that the Filipino arts are superior is that the training has benefits that supercharges one's empty-hand skills - you benefit even if you never carry a weapon. Drills like sumbrada, numerada, and hubud-lubud are some examples. The training methods themselves are superior.

Another reason is that you quickly learn how to use anything as a weapon. Of course you're not going to be walking around with a stick or parang (machete), but there is usually going to be something lying around that you can use in the same manner. If you don't carry a knife, a short stick or a pen can be used. You don't have to study dozens of different weapons to get this benefit.

Other weapons arts worth investigating - Silat (especially Pencak Silat Mande Muda), Krabri Krabrong, Bando (never mess with anyone carrying a Kukhri). Don't limit yourself to one art! Spar a lot, and if you can find Shaolin people or ninjas who want to exchange info (ie. spar), do it! Spar with western fencers, kendoists, SCA people, whoever.

      Bahala na!
