  • Punching with dumbells

How many of you Martial Artists do this type of drill ? You have 5 pound ( or heavier ) dumbells. You hold them and punch with them. Did this help your power and speed ? Anyways if it did how long did it take until you notice any results ? I`d like to know.

    I forgot to mention

If u this type of drill, does it matter what type of dumbells you use ? Because I`d like to start donig this drill, properly.

you'd be better off working on your pushups. Try to do the slow to build your base muscles and then work on doing them quickly to build endurance. Then progress to lifting off the ground. then launching all the way up to the seats on chairs.

puching with weights is okay, but you have a very good chance of overextending and injuring yourself. You also may develop some problems with your technique.

better off just punching the heavy bag to build speed.

      Just my opinion.

Good question, but I agree with what excessive force said, you should do pushups and stuff like he said. I reckon punching with dumbells could injure your arms, so be extra careful if you do do it.

oh also this should be in the training section not here

          okay thxs but

its christmas. My mom said I was allowed to open one of the presents. So i did. It was gloves with weights on them. It was called "aeroglove" It was 2 pounds each. It wasn`t really effective just 2 pounds each arm. So I wore 2 gloves on one hand. It`s 4 pounds now.... So I started punching, 20 straight punches, or right cross, lol :P I dun even knew what punches I was doing, they were just going straight, a bit curved. Then after that 20, I did 20 hooks ( Not sure if I am doing them properly ) Do these gloves work ? have any of you guys tried them, or seen them before ? Anyways I took the gloves off my right arm, I did the same punches, wooooh, My arm felt like it weighed nothing :P. Same goes for my left arm. I try to keep the technique as right as possible.

So, my main point here is, yeah I have been doing some pushups, I started about 3 months ago, beginning of october. Nowdays, (don`t laugh) I can do 30 to 40 (50 sometimes) straight knuckle pushups. I can do diamonds pretty well. One class once, the class was instructed to do as many pushups as u can in a minute, and I did 55 knuckles. ( they were at least very close to proper ones ) Sry If you think I am bragging because I`m not, and i know u guys can do much much better than I can Just wanting to know if that is enough to start these Dumbell drills. My arm muscles aren`t that big, I don`t expect them to be becasue I`m pretty skinny guy, and considered "weak person" around where I live. But they are shaped, their not the type of bones that pop out when I flex, It`s muscle !

So what do you think, do these 'aerogloves' work good? Keep in mind I`m a begginer :P But still, I want to try stuff that will increase speed when i am at home doing nothing.

BTW, one last thing, what is a good dumbell type to do these type of drills ? or does it not matter

workout out doing a bench press would also be pretty good, and those pushups mentioned before are also a good idea and both would build up the chest quite a bit to.. once you have developed out then do those drills

Also doing puchups on your fists helps alot to condition knuckles, you could try some of them.

Using very light weights (weighted gloves are ideal) is a reasonably good idea to improve SPEED. But trying to use bigger weights in the hope that you will increase power is a non starter.

Think of the direction you want the force to go. If you are throwing a straight right, you want the power to travel in a horizontal direction, into the opponent. Now hold the weight. OK, throwing it in the right cross does send the weight in a horizontal direction but, which way does gravity want the weight to go? Vertically down! Not horizontal at all. So your efforts are undermined by gravity.

So, the way to adjust your position to take this into account would be to lie on your back and punch upwards. Then you are moving against gravity. But you can't throw a technically correct punch this way anyway, as you cannot freely move your torso. So that is inefficient as well.

So, build the muscle (and not the technique) by lying on your back and lifting the weight. Why not lift a lot of weight. You could call it a bench press ( hee hee hee). That will build your power potential. Build the technique by punching. And punch a fair sized bag.

Doing both will increase your power. But you can't do both at at the same time. Work the technique at the beginning of your workout, and the weights at the end.

i used to but then i quit because i almost hyperextended my arm. so now my work out consists of these exersises that i made up by myself and weight class:

first i sit and extend on leg out other in and try to touch my nose with my knee on each leg.
                    second i do 50 crunches
third i lay on my back and push up two 30 pound weight 50 times
fourth i do 50 more crunches
fifth i do more defferent streches
sixth i do 50 more crunches
seventh i curl the 30 pount weights
                    occasionally i do pushups

the problem with my work out is that i do no leg exercises or jogging but thats because i hate going out in the winter. so i just do some shadow boxing. and i think my punches are fast. you would be suprised how strong i am for size

I practice punching w/ dumbbells every other sunday for 20 mins. It's helpful b/c your shoulders hurt and so when you are sparring you can keep your hands up longer without feeling that burn. I don't find it helping my technique, but I did find it helpful if it is done half hour prior to competition, as long as you don't exhaust yourself for the competition.
