  • Wing Chun effectiveness in basic form?

    Hey

newbie here been lurking for a while - but Hey, I'm over here in the UK, study Muay Thai but havent for very long (and unfortunately I don't do it enough) but bout it. Im interested in everything Started TKD before quickly moving on to Muay Thai...

Just wondering, someone I know recently had a fight with a mate of mine, and I was worried for my mate because he well, never fights, and the other guy has studied about 4 or 5 months of Wing Chun.

Everyone talks about how useful Wing Chun is (Saw a lot of people saying useless etc)... Anyway, the fight was funny, my friend (big and strong, though not trained in anything, and not conditioned) just got in close, grabbed him, and beat him lol.

I know that I don't know a lot about Wing Chun, and altho worried for my mate, I was hoping to see a bit more of it than I did How good would he have been in such a short time? Just interested ot hear others views

Since I don't know exactly what Wing Chun is, I can't vouch for or against it's effectiveness. From a website I looked it, it appears to be the Chinese form of karate, except in later training they use sticks and knives.

4 or 5 months of training isn't that long, so I would have to say your friend didn't fight an experienced person. Unless he (the wing chun person) knew grappling defense, his fancy punches and kicks wouldn't help him anyway.....

It is based a lot on infighting by dominating the center line and on trapping the other guy's hands when he tries to parry. Where I live Wing Chun is gaining popularity among security people and SWAT-type units.
In my opinion great stuff - but focuses too much on this one distance.

Wing Chun definitely is a close-combative art. It is very effective; the principles it teaches about guarding your center and getting "off the line" to deliver your attack from the opponent's blind side are important no matter what art you study. I don't find that it focuses at close range to the exclusion of dealing with fighting at other ranges; rather, attacks are delivered in close, whereas defense (coupled with moving in to deliver those attacks) can happen at any range.

There is only 2 ranges of combat to a WCK man - contact, and no contact.

Depending on how you train 4-5 months is plenty of time. Each fight is different and chaotic. Combat cannot be predicted.

In my opinion 4-5 months is not a long time in wing chun as the starting point of any art is getting the practitioner's strength and co-ordination together and a couple of months wouldnt give somebody any greater advantage than they already possessed before training. The fact is some people are suited to certain styles which makes them effective. Its not just the style or just the person its the combination.

oh come on Sharp Phil !!

              Sharp Phil,
you know, I can fully appreciate someone wanting to put in a nice discreet link to their website but do you really have to put in an image that makes a page load slower for the users of this forum, do you really feel the need to quite so blatently PLUG your site so much, its bad enough seeing your pictures in every damn post on that other forum, and for crying out loud, heres a question,
who in all hell is the fat porker in that pic within your banner (noted on sdf forums)??!

if you want to contribute some good talk and help others, especially the young, develop some knowledge and improve themselves, get lost if all your going to do is plug/market your McDojo, boy
who would dream of taking lessons from some ridiculous obese porker, then there is all the 'little mentions' of the swords etc being on sale at your site.........

I come on here from time to time to try and offer some knowledge & insight/help from my many years experience of MA's and you will never see any sad link to any sad site, so shove it boy, oh, & shave the goatie for crying out loud, charletan..........
              have a nice day

Hu San? TraceyKarate reborn??? or is it Patterson?

WTF are you talking about? I hope you are just being a smartass.

But then again I don't see any smilies.

If all of your knowledge and insight consists of nothing more than bashing warriorwoman and Sharp Phil, and whining about a slow internet connection, then I most certainly feel honored to bask in your genius.

You impress the hell out of me.

Maybe if we all chipped in and bought you a six month subscription to the DSL provider of your choice? Would that go towards making you feel better?

I mean I'm all about what you want.

what I object to is the type of people who use the forums (various MA forums) to shove banners and blatently market their sites.
I notice that there is 'proper paying' advertising on Defend.net hence the legit banners at the top of each page.

At the end of the day, those that feel the need to go into some advertising campaign should contact the site owners rather than launch their own pseudo campaign within each of their 'posts', whats so wrong with not liking that approach??

Szczepankiewicz, whats up?, are you threatened by something boy?, ah, I forgot, there is a link in every one of your signatures, what, not enough visitors to your site?

Lastly, I dont teach the general public and therefore do not have the need for any website, I specifically teach federal & law enforcement depts, by demand and on a freelance basis as this is not my main job, so whats wrong with having a go at what I consider to be 'Overly Commercial Types', in case you didnt realise it, there are a lot of fake, second rate so called 'Dojos' out there & yes I will have a go at the types of 'business people' that I come across from time to time.

If you dont like it then, well, up yer adolescent ass babe.

                    HuSanYan,

I can't believe you posted that drivel on two threads. What's the matter? Fingers broke after the first post?

I come on here from time to time to try and offer some knowledge & insight/help from my many years experience of MA's and you will never see any sad link to any sad site, so shove it boy, oh, & shave the goatie for crying out loud,
Your valuable insight? Keep it. The only things you have offered are mindless babble and pissy whining. As for the link, I have a different theory as to why YOU don't have one: people would discover who you really are, find you, and beat you to within an inch of your life. It wouldn't take much effort to round up the posse here, and if you've posted anywhere else, then I'm sure the feeling is universal and quite a group could be collected.

Don't bother responding. I can't engage you in a battle of wits. It is dishonorable to attack an unarmed man. (that's you, in case it wasn't self-evident).

Some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them

                      HSY,

I may have been a little harsh on the first reply, but now I have a mature question. Just wondering: were you banned from SDF? SouthNarc doesn't put up with any crap over there. Nobody gets banned here, so please try to take it down a few notches.

i recently viewed the sdf forum for the first time and that is where I found the full banner of that guy, thats all.
I havent been banned from any forum because I have very rarely posted on any of them, including ones on other subject matter other than the mAs.

It's just that over the vacation period, i have had a bit of time to surf the net (just got a new computer for the first time in a while) and subsequently have found a few mA forums, which i think are a great idea.
                        hope that answers your question.
                        take care

Yeah, there's something up my adolescent. It's your finger and I already told you I don't swing that way I don't care HOW cute the puppies are.....

Ya see, Sharp Phil was invited to join this forum. That's pretty rare when someone is considered interesting enough to acutally be invited to do something. Have you ever been invited to do something? Anything? If not, I can invite you to leave and that will solve everybody's heartburn.

It's one thing to poke fun and tease, it's an entirely different issue when you blast someone whom you don't know, haven't 'talked' to, and are basically just showing your ass.

You've started some pretty good thread discussions, whether I agree or disagree with you is not the point, but I sure as hell won't sit idly by and watch someone trash talk any of the following:

                          Bri Thai
                          CrazyJoe380
                          Sharp Phil
                          Mushinmaster
                          YellaTiger
                          RyanHall
                          jiu-jitsu.net (Gene Simco)
                          Phil Cardella

Or pretty much anyone else who regulary posts to the forum.

Now, if you get into an argument, that's different, I tend to stay out of those. But if you want to spew off at the mouth over something stupid, then that's gonna hurt my feelings and I'm gonna lash out.

Hell son, I'd even type on your behalf if someone were to come on the board and smear your good name.

All I ask is that you obey the Golden Rule (not to be confused with the Golden Shower) and we'll have lot's of laughs.

Otherwise, I'm just gonna follow you around and be an asswipe. According to my wife, it's what I do best.

                            Szczepankiewicz,
is this supposed to be of concern to me?, I guess I'm missing the point.

I will post whatever I wish to do so whenever I wish to do so and on whatever forum I wish to do so.

I think it's nice you sticking up for your electronic buddies, it shows that no doubt you are a loyal person and I respect that.
