Not to dis Helio and his sons intentionally but the best GJJ fighters to come out of their camp are the Gracies themselves. I haven't seen anything close to that from their students. Although some are great in thier own right but I'm talking percentages.

Carlson Gracie on the other hand, was a top fighter and has produced many of the top BJJ fighters, sport and Vale Tudo. And also created probably the best fight team of our generation.

I know that the story goes that "most of the Gracies" trained under Helio at one time or another but you have to give credit where credit is due! Carlson Gracies instructor was his father, Carlos Gracie!

Helio has said that there are good and bad BJJ instructors. I think that sums it up pretty good!

It is hard to compare to the Gracie Academy. I was able to learn from Joe Moreira because he was coming up to San Jose every 2-3 months to teach his student. Roy Harris also came up every few months for the same reason. It was great exposure but it was far from "weekly"! History will tell us, you pay for what you get! But don't get scammed! Do your research!

So, you're saying that your average $50 a month BJJ school(often headed by a seminar promoted purple belt) offers BETTER instruction than what you can get at the Gracie Academy?

Jared buddy Please! Are you trying to convince yourself of that?

If it's one of those "Minnesota Martial Arts" chains, I would be careful. There is one in Seattle that offers all those styles in one location, but only about 2 instructors. And c'mon how adept can two guys be at 5 different martial arts?

You get what you pay for.

You are right! I trained under one of Joe Moreiras students who now is a black belt. Joe's BJJ is pure, comes down a slighly differant line though.

I thought I kind of did both...maybe not. I'm certianly no expert...I'm just a guy with an opinion.

Helio Gracie's point is that he is the source for all BJJ, and BJJ is not the source for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
