  • Thinking of taking up Martial Arts

I am thinking of taking up a Martial Art. I have been looking into Tae Kwon Do and Chito Ryu Karate. I really dont have that much of a choice where I live, those are the only two that are offered in my area. I am a full time college student with a part time job. It will be kind of difficult to juggle school, work, and training. I have a green belt in TKD, but I got that when I was 10 years old.

Any suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Eric

Is it just me, or does everyone do TKD? Admit it, almost everyone here has done TKD sometime.

I tell you what Mr.P., I snicker everytime I see yer name here. Gota love it. And I did TKD. AAAHHHHGGGggg.
But to the topic. SupGT. Keep in mind that not all schools advertise. Some are nothing more than holes in the wall or outa someones garage. The deal is, many times these are the best places. Be sure to hit the net as well. Do go just by whats in the Ypages. As far as the selections you listed, I would sugest watching a class and talk with the students. Ask the lower belts how they feel about the classes, how effective do they feel the system is and then do the same for other grades. Get a varied opinion from people of different skill levels. I at all possible get a free class. I wouldn't settle for a demo. Most times what they do at demos are techniques that are taught at master levels and around there to get you in. A good system should be effective and efficient even at the lowest levels. This is practical self- defense.

What do you want out of the Martial arts e.g do you want to be able to defend yourself on the street, you want it purley for fittness, for competition? you have to be a little more specific man.

Yea alot of people have done TKD at some time thats where they usually get there bad opinions of it at sometime, I know thats where I got mine

MrPoopy, I don`t like TKD. I had to do I think one class that do only TKD kicks. But I actually thought it wasn`t that bad ( I swear I would like TKD if their kicks were just as effective as the MT kicks, TKD mostly snaps, uggghs), I mean like, it would improve your kicking speed, and accuracy right? Would it also improve your your thai roundhouse kicks, and teep or carry a bad habit over TKD by snapping and not following through ?

I would like to do everything you listed: Defense, fitness, and competition. I am 6'2 195lbs, to get/stay in shape would be probably the most important. Defense would be next then competition.

Do Taekwondo. It's the deadliest most effective Martial Discipline on the planet.

Wear your uniform to school and work and NO ONE will ever dare mess with you.

                    Negative Megatron,

A TKD blackbelt can and will destroy any and all, especially those fools who grapple.

The only martial art that MIGHT be even close to as deadly as Taekwondo is Ninjitsu. But that's not readily available in most areas. Finding a true master is next to impossible.

                    Dobok! Jeum! Juchoom Sogi!!!

                      Ok,

I have to admit that I was being a bit saucy and smartassed.

In reality, any martial art has good things to bring to your training.

They can also bring bad things.

You have to be the judge. No one can walk the path for you.

                      Just remember:

Life has niether rewards nor punishments, only consequences.
