Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating the use of spin kicks in a street altercaltion. not saying I have never seen them used effectively because I have.
I was giving an example of how they might be used. Since I train Ground fighting as well as stand up. I'm not really concerned what a grappler might do.
Hell just kick them in the groin, punch them in the throat and poke them in the eye, bite there carotid artery.
Tools are tools. TKD can be evective but usually isn't taught to be.
The tools are still valid
If you were to throw a spin kick in a fight you deserve what you get for good or bad. but someone mentioned getting kicked in the base leg. That is where the jump comes in. It keeps you from loosing balance from getting hit in the base leg. I'm not saying spin kicks should be thrown in a fight though.
It's funny though, in 1984 I learned kicks now usually called Thai Kicks, but i was taking Taekwondo. Fluid shock is fluid shock, Impulse shock is impulse shock. It's all physics.
Just like people keeping their hands at their waist. I have been taught to use a proper gaurd since I was a little kid. but I have seen TKD schools that don't worry about keeping their hands up and can't punch to save their life. That is not TKD, that is a lousy instructor and there are tons of them out there.

Fluid shock is best summed up like this.
Time on contact and full body rotation.
if using a round kick to the common Peroneal (nerve on outside of leg) in a left lead stance, Left leg shifts left. Right leg thrown with only a slight bend but basically straight. at point of contact it sticks so to speak and trys to maintain contact for as long as possible. It must follow through the target.
Impulse shockwave is used what a technique it thrown at high speed and only makes momentary contact with the target.
I did it breaking boards one day, You throw the fastest technique you can but pull back as soon as it makes contact. This is used to bony surfaces where prolonged energy transference my cause a backlash into the striking tool causing injury.
You mostly see it in snap kicks that are executed properly.
Although my father used it with a car and a deer. No damage to the car but the deer died instantly. Just some brusing at the point of impact.
Is that clear as mud or what

I didn't know it was so easy to defend against grappling!
You realize that those techniques above probably would not finish off a fighter? Yes those tools are valid but not If the guy is a better grappler than you are, he WILL take you down and those techniques can be applied to the bottom, but on the top position, those same techniques can be applied alot more effectively.
What kind of grappling did you take and for how long?Last edited by YeLLa-TiGeR; 01-13-2003, 12:57 PM.

i was kidding about the techniques. But in all honesty you bite through the carotid artery and they are finished. They will bleed to death in a few minutes.
I did BJJ, and some mixed stuff from a group that does Mixed MA. I have also done some Judo and a bit of wrestling in high school.
Every tool has it's time and place. If you overemphasis any technique or class of techniques you will get hurt eventually.

Real fights dont look pretty. Jump spin .double kicks. Well forty years ago worked good now people have seen alot of the m/a tools without ever taking a class. Basic small set of workable tools will out do all the fancy point tag I got you stuff any day. TKD was a good art. still is if you learn it. Train to long for the legs where did the hands go. Any kicker can get shut down. And the one strike kill is bull now. People are not training that way. Flashy moves please the crowd at the local tournement. Some of the wtf sparring looks like to roosters. hands are used to shove peopkle back to kick. BAD for real fighting. IF you do tkd. I said it was good if you make it good. Put the real back into it. add some ground work and do away with the fancy kicks except for just to finish, and simpal tools will do that. Every art has tools that wont apply most of the time. ANd alot of traditional arts save some good tools until after blackbelt. Do not need that today. The gun stopped that need long ago. And the bully never stays to the end. Tools up front student learns there needs. TKD has to gain respect agin, For get this is olympic tkd this school has the state champ the other 150 in this state does to. I have seen some good tkd people years back how about getting to see some today. If any art slips past what it was intended to be it fails m/a is m/a learning to fight then not fighting to just fight.
