I feel like the first five posts were repeated over and over again in various forms. People float the same ideas, disagree, and then agree after things have been argued out. I feel used...

Nope. You're wrong.
LOSER!
OK, Spanky. Now you've done it. If and when I come to potato town, you'll be in trouble. We'll see once and for all how "The Internet Polish Assassin" stacks up against the Basque Berserker. I will call on all those other internet tough guys to come and bear witness to this epic clash

Kicks work when they work. juust part of the fight. A good boxer anyou are just a kicker he will take your legs and end the fight. If you have the timeing and can change the ranges then kicking works as a part to the game. If you can not float in and out of the ranges you wont last long. Its the combination of tools that help the fighter. good kicking followed by punches knock you out more then just a kick. Multi opponents have more arms and legs aginst you You can just do what you can and hope for the best.

"I agree with you Robert... My point is simply that kicking is just as effective as punching if you're a good kicker.

So if thats true is "your punching and kicking overrated?"

I was twisting your words. Everybody in here re-thinks what they say here and there.
Actually I learned to gapple to cover that aspect of a fight. Primarily I'm a stand up fighter, but i can mix it up in any range because I put the time in all ranges.
Thats what it takes. Before you get on the freeway, you have to take the side streets to get there. Its the same with martial arts. Before you can shorten up a technique, you have to know it well, you do that by learning it correctly first, practicing it thoroughly, then modifying to fit "your personal format!"

Can anyone imagine trying to catch a swift kick to the ribs, or a jab... Not as easy as it sounds. When in a real fight, you do what you must and that involves kicking for someone who has powerful legs.

Thanks, Jesse. Great Sage, if you were half the warrior you claim to be, you would know that most martial arts techniques do NOT work very well or at all in real fights. A jab kick to the stomach? Good Lord. Joint locks and throws on a violent assailant? Not a chance. Period. Once shots start flying, that stuff usually goes out the window. The only reason cops like aikido is because people don't try to punch them as soon as they lay their hands on for a lock--they chill and try not to add to their sentence. If you go and talk to some people who have a lot of expericene with REAL fighting, they will tell you, as I tell you now, that locks and throws only work on "yes" people--those that don't really want to hurt you or don't have the ability to do it. If you ever want to try that lock/throw stuff, you almost always have to soften them up with blows and strikes first.
Overrated? What are suggesting, that I use my head? I use punches, kicks and throws with joint locks, whatever presents itself. If your advocating grappling, it's just as limiting as any martial art. Trying to grapple in a street fight isn't as easy as the UFC. I remember an article in "Black Belt" magazine by Ryoce Gracie where he said that against more than one attacker, grappling is useless that's why he teaches kicks and punches as well. Go figure.
Sorry for the rant, guys.

Ryan,
I have to disagree slightly about the "yes" comment
In a clinch anything can happen, even a through. Two guys fall to the ground and start rolling around or one gets ponded, what ever. But just before that there was an opening.
And in class you practice with "yes" cooperation but thats to learn the mechanics of the techniques. Once you ally them to a real street type of fight anything can happen and you have to modify as needed.
I can't even count the times I've grappled in BJJ with guys that don't realize the traditional techniques I could of used. In that type of class you can't , they would get hurt. But the point is once the struggle starts, the small joints start opening up along with the rest.
Once your in tight, if your good you can make it work. If you haven't spent enough time at it, then maybe not. But thats why I practice BJJ and trad. JJ, the BJJ sets up my trad. JJ and my JKD.
I'm not saying I'm looking to grapple, it just happens and you have to be able to handle it all.

Just my thoughts anyways.

You also touched something important, the being overwhelmed part. When you get overwhelmed, you don't have time to think what you will do, you just do. So what you practice is what is going to come into play.
I stress the need to control the overwhelming situation and I'm pretty good at "tying someone up into a pretzel", thats my way of control. Theres no control in toe to toe especially if your smaller.
It dosen't take much to get stunned. In the event of getting stunned, anybodys whole game plan can be shot out the door. But the only thing we can do is train, not just realistically. You have to have something to start with in the first place. Or else all you've got is a brawl.
If you train alot of technique in all ranges and add some realism in all ranges, then when the time comes, all you have to do is not panic, the rest will fall into place!
