  • Need BJJ info

I live in Omaha ,NE. And there's no BJJ schools. I still have learned alot of submissions from Pride,U.F.C, grappling mag , the internet. But I know it's still not a school I train like I'm in a school but I know it's not the same. I have beat all state wrestlers and other "fake" BJJ practionenrs. What it boils down to is what should I do to advance my skills. I've learned counters the same way I learned submissions But I know there's way more to be learned. I believe that even though I don't have an instructor I still have good tech. but I guess I'm looking for imput on my dilemma and maybe some good counters

In lieu of a good BJJ instructor, you should find either a good Judo or a good wrestling instructor for your grappling. Check out some boxing from a boxing instructor.

Beating scrubs makes you king of the scrubs. But if you're not careful, you'll teach yourself wrong and have some bad habits that will be very painful to undo.

If you are into competition, check out BJJ: Basics and BJJ: The Master Text from www.jiu-jitsu.net.

These are by far the best BJJ books I have looked at.

Remember though, there is no substitute for proper instruction.

Sometime I like to pretend that I'm the submission technission, but I know I'm not. It definetly feels good to catch someone in an achilles lock or arm bar but like you said "King of the scrubs" isn't cutting it. I have moderate Kickboxing experience, along with a good wrestling background, I just wish there was a good or even some kind of BJJ school here. Does anyone know of some good videos. Books are ok as I mentioned early I learned a few things from magazines, but I prefer videos

Last I heard there is a school in or very close to Omaha. There's a guy from my old BJJ school that goes to college in Omaha and he does BJJ there also. It must be around there somewhere.

Keep in mind that a lot of schools don't go out of their way to advertise.

EDIT: looks like Rodrigo Vaghi has a school in Omaha.

EDIT2: http://www.submissionjiujitsu.com/ombio.html Lists the instructors for Omaha, or atleast Vaghi's team is based in Omaha. It doesn't list anything about a school. Spanky won't like this. They are all blue belts.

If they are all blue belts, ok, I didn't say other people couldn't pay lots of money for mediocre training. I just said that I would not.

On that I would disagree sir.

I would gladly train with the blue belts, I would not train 'under' the blue belts. At least not for money.

OF COURSE this could all change if I get a blue belt and open my own school. THEN I'll be singing a different tune cashing the checks!

Depends on the price. If he can train for 50 bucks a month he can probly keep learning from blue belts for maybe a year or more. Beyond that he'd need more than a blue belt to teach him.

To pay or not to pay? Hmmmmmmm. What If I proved self worth? Grant it I'm the king of the submission scrubs but it's still king of something! So train but don't pay? Should I tell em spanky said so?

Exactly, go in to the workout area and tell them that Spanky said you didn't have to pay the lowly Blue Belts a red nickel! That will certainly endear you to everyone in the group!

You have to see the other, more detailed discussions on this subject prior to quoting the all knowing Szczepankiewicz!

Holy crap, you'd think that Spanky was a celebrity or something. It just goes to show you that you don't have to say anything wise to become well known....

I would have to agree with Spanky in his first response. Judo can teach you a lot of ground work and of course it can improve your stand up skills.

Judo is usually pretty cheap. But if you decide to do Judo, make sure you're studying under a real instructor. Judo is pretty wide spread and so are frauds claiming to teach Judo.
