  • The Ears

One thing I've noticed about experienced MMAs, they've got those ears.

I wonder, how many blows and head-butts do you have to take in the head to get permanent damage like that? The swelling never goes down. It must be scar-tissue.

Even moreso with the wrestlers. Grapplers get it from people pulling on their ears all the time. If I remember correctly, it is fluid that initially fills a portion of the ear, causing it to deform. If it isn't cut and drained, the defomation becomes permanent.

In my neighborhood they are called "wrestler's ears" and are formed when your ear gets twisted hard on the matt. And yes, they are formed when stuff break up in the earlobe, fluids (blood and other) build up and then heal up with internal scar tissue.

It is usually called califlower ear and is caused by a blow or tear to the ear. If not treated it can cause pain and lead to the need for surgical removal of the damaged tissue. It is very common for wrestlers and for boxers.

Once it starts it is much easier to get in the future.

you should aways wear ear protection if you are at risk of getting your ears mauled.

It called hematoma but usually called cauliflower ear. When the cartilage in the ear breaks and bleeds it swells in the ear. So all the swelling is blood.

I don't know if this is true or not but I heard that some people with califlower ears use them to rub in the oppenents eyes and nose on the ground in the guard because I guess the ears are hard or something, wouldnt that hurt the ear of the person doing it? It might of been randy couture or matt lindland who said that or some wrestler I don't know.

Smothering an opponent with your ears; now that's determination.
