    Hey, well we're on the subject of Thi Chi, does anyone know an instructer in Eastern PA or close to the NJ boarder?

      If you would like to see Ba gua in action go to www.energyart.com and look in the ba gua section under fighting. there is a movie there of kumar taking unrehearsed attacks.
      i couldn't find a "fighting" section anywhere on that site.....
      couldn't find anything on any martial arts....could you be more specific?

                  Depends on where your training and how you're training, but either way don't pick Aikido, it is great for many things but not self defence.

                  I love Judo and the unique groundwork and takedowns is useful.

                  PLT is another decent choice, granted you don't sit there and punch air all day.

                  If you want to defend yourself, train in an effective manner, against real resisting opponents, get familiar with conflict avoidance, weapons, and quick but effective striking and throwing, groundwork should proabably be known at least on a rudimentary level, real fights often end up here. Remember, a few bottles of sunblock is cheaper than years of treatment and possible death from malinoma (sure its a bad analogy, but I like it that way, if you don't get my point get back to me).

                      I know very very little about PLT and without learning much more about it (does it have another name?) I can't vote for it. Of the suggestion I would suggest Judo. I suggest this because of how Judoka train compared to Aikidoka. In Judo training is done in a way that much more easily translates to use in a real situation where Aikido is more kata with the pre-rehearsed uke and nage training style.

                      If one was to look at other arts I would suggest Jeet Kune Do taught as it was when Bruce Lee died. I'm not a Bruce was the greatest ever type, I just realize his style is an effective striking art. The problem is finding a qualified instructor (one tip is to watch his use and explanation of the strait lead). The other art I would suggest is BJJ. This art is a flat out effective grappling art. Both of these arts are highly focused on sparing and training in ways that most easily translate into real life application. There are other arts that could be suggested (i.e. mauy or sambo) but these simply are my preference.

                        Tai Chi can be use for self defense. Tai Chi has very effective simple methods. It is a shame that people today see old people on the streets praticing Tai Chi for health and they think that is all there is to it.

                          My caveat is that Judo is dangerous. You can break something as you try to “break fall.” I wouldn’t pick any of the 3 if self defense is your primary goal. I’d go with Krav Maga or some other system geared specifically for self defense. MMA and BJJ are good too.

                            Wow, good point, best to avoid anything dangerous in your SD training, stick to MMA/BJJ so the dangerous elements like weapons, multiple opponents and throws are not a part of your training...
