  • Whose your favorite fighter?

We here a lot of negative things about fighers on this board, but I was wondering who everyone on this board respected, or would never cheer against no matter what.

That person to me is Renzo Gracie. I really love the way he fights, the way he acts in interviews, the way he accepted his losses to Tamura and Sakuraba etc. I'm not saying he's the best fighter, but I just couldn't think of any fighter I'd rather see then Renzo; he's just my favorite. I think even though he's humble, he can also be a dick when the time calls for it. I think it was totally acceptable against Ben Spijkers to do what he did, the announcers making Renzo seem like the bad guy when Spijkers is the one that said Renzo looked like his girlfriend and then when he lost he just laid on the floor; I would've probably jumped on his neck, not just stepped.

Other fighters I really like are Mo Smith, Tsyoushi Kohsaka, Frank Shamrock, Don Frye [he looked different last time I saw him, I wonder if it'll affect what I think of him], Kazushi Sakuraba [who doesn't like him?] Allen Goes and some BJJ guys I like are Bustamante, Walid Ismaeil and my instructor Marcelo Perdon [I'm not exactly sure of the spelling of his last name, if anyone's heard of him make sure to let me know]. Anyway, just trying a positive thread for a change, although I know trolling is what gets responses, oh well...

    Vandelei Silva
BTW I think this forum repects the fights waaaay more than the UG or other forums.
I like Vanderlei Silva, because he's a badass

Sakuraba because he fights for the fans

Tito Ortiz because he tries to be exciting.

        Favorite?

Mo Smith. Class, heart, skill, athleticism...the guy has it all. If he were younger, he'd probably still be undefeated. Like Renzo, takes his losses like a man.

Close second, Mo's training partner Frank Shamrock. Probably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world when he's active. I do wish he would shut up occasionally though.

I have a lot of respect for Sak, Renzo, and Oleg as well.

I'm on Sak's bandwagon as well (or would that be Sak's jock? ). I don't know much about his actual ability, and I can't really judge how he would do against other fighters, but what kind of maniac would run at Renzo with loaded "Mongolian Chop" as a feint to set up a leg kick. Plus that Power Rangers style double chop he tried on Royce. He's just plain entertaining. I wish I could be that natural when it's on the line. I'm going to practice cartwheeling, and leaping past open guards right now.

As far as impressive fighters: Maurice Smith really showed me how much a grappling skill set can help a power striker. Not that I have much power, but I'm mainly a striker, so now I have hope .

Renzo, from what I've seen has some strong skills, but I was very impressed with his honor. No excuses, no complaining. I hope I'm like that when I lose (cause I'm sure it's gonna happen a lot).

Yuki Kondo is also another impressive figher. He's got some fast knee strikes, and his ability to close the gap to land his shots is pretty impressive to me. I like his speed, and ability to deal with superior grapplers with his strikes.

There's also a new batch of fighters coming out that I like. I'm definitely going to keep watching as they come up. Ian Freeman (The Machine, baby!! You gotta give the guy props. He's very impressive, and he even stops by here to chat with us ), Chris Brennan, Jeremy Horn and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few others.

These next two may not be my favorites, but I give them respect, and I do feel that they are a couple of the best.

Royce Gracie - yeah, yeah I know what you're saying, but what he did in the first UFC's left a lasting impression on me (even though I really didn't like him at first, and kinda wished someone would have pounded the crap out of him). He was a big part of the mainstream "wake up call" that the Martial arts world needed.

Frank Shamrock - his hard work and scientific approach is going to do a lot for the sport. He learns from his losses, and comes back better every time.

My favorite NHB fighter today is Sakuraba.

He's ugly, I hate him, I always root against him; and yet the SOB keeps winning.

Now watch: now that I have been converted into a believer and fan, he will lose

              Yours truly,

              Joe

Igor Vov. Without a doubt the most exciting fighter in NHB. IFC 96 is still clearly etched in my mind.

Renzo for his no bullshit approach. Another thing I like about Renzo is that he is very openminded.
Royce for his inspiration(I think he's pretty damn inspirational what with his pathetic fighting frame).
And Sak is great as well, and shows what someone who looks like a japanese tourist can really do.

Vov. in the IFC was good stuff, he wasn't phased by having to fight those giants.

Randy Couture because he is a very chill fighter in and out of the ring, plus he's the only "wrestler" in NHB that has a well rounded game.

Mo Smith because a lot of his punches look like a freakin' snake striking.

Don Frye, although he hasn't fought in years (as far as I know) when he did he pounded almost anyone he went against. He really got into the ring looking for the KO, he was aggresive and went for the kill.

Vitor Belfort because he is usually exciting to watch.

Lots of other guys just for being bad dudes.

Royce, Ruas, Taktarov, and Rutten. They are the reason I started fighting, they are the reason I continue fighting, and they are the reason thatI will someday be great at fighting.

I thik Ruas was the first fighter I really got into. He was always fun to watch. I think one of the first guys I saw who could knock you out OR tap you out, whichever he chose. I also really like his ring presence. Very relaxed.

Allan Goes (awesome open guard), Wallid (His drive truly inspires me), Tank was always fun to watch. (You knew Royce was going to put on a clinic of technique, but when Tank entered the ring, someone could end up being carried out of the octagon. Scary figher.)

But seriously, I respect anyone who steps up to fight NHB/Vale Tudo. That's just a whole different level.

                              Frank.

                              Sak.

When you talk about complete fighters, these guys are specimens.
