Actually, NDIrish, maybe not. I'm undecided on the death penalty. In my gut I believe it is more or less revenge. Any eye for an eye. Sometimes I can understand that, sometimes I wonder if it really helps in the end.
So let's just call it that: an eye for an eye.
My problem is when people insist that it deters, and that's why it's legit. That's an old mantra that needs to be retired.
As for innocent people being executed, I'm sure it's happened many times. I'm all for suspending it at least (like here in Illinois--by a Republican governor, by the way) until we're damn sure there's not some funny business.
To think (as some do) "Oh well, a few innocent guys will have to get smoked" every year or month because nobody wants to be bothered I find appalling and unacceptable.
Know what I mean?

nhb, you are right...you have provided some obviously ovjective references that have proven me wrong....
Tony, I do know what you mean. To "not bother" with looking into something as important as this would be a crime in and of itself...There is may also be an element of an "eye for an eye" in it...I know that if someone murdered my wife and son, I would not hesitate to take their life. I am sure I would go out of my way to do it, in fact. So, revenge may be a factor on a personal level, but I have a hard time believing it is a factor on a governmental level...who knows.

huh?
I don't know if you are being sarky i can only guess so.
I don't discount out of hand revenge as a good reason.
My dad was very convincing that it was justice for the families of victims that was the real issue.
My thing is you must be absolutely sure and absolutely fair(which you cannot be).
So until you are, just don't do it.
On the other hand, if I was faced with the culprit of murdering my family i believe that revenge would be perfectly fine with me.

I have read all the information before that you have provided ND, and it's reaching material used to divert the obvious facts. Nothing that you have provided displays any concrete data that cannot be slanted or dismissed. These are statistical numbers and hypotheses, and nothing that can accurately state what is actually taking place.
Executing a small number of people should not be justified based on "fuzzy math."
These are not paegan times, and sacrificing human life for the good of something fanciful is not acceptable.
If a system of punishment involving death cannot be perfect, and we have fit and just forms of punishing the guilty persons otherwise, there is no amount of debating that could allow the innocent to die, no matter how small the number is.
Any educated person can collect statistical data and philosophically and rationally argue their case, but the fact reamins that logic, and the simple understanding of human nature leads us to the proper conclusion that the only thing that deters murder is a functional, rational, and and sane human mind.
