  • Took first karate class tonight

Tonight I went to a local TKD school. The instructor is a police officer and has experience in several arts, TKD, shotokon, Kenpo, and a few others that I cant remember. I used to take TKD, about 10 years ago, so he said I could start off where I left off. So I started tonight as a green belt. We spent a few minutes going over form but the rest of the night we learned some grappling and a few take downs. It was great and I Loved every minute of it.

Just figured Id let you guys know.

    Thanks
    Eric

Stick with it! I hope you enjoy it, and learn a bunch.

But just out of curiosity, are you learning TKD or Karate? You mentioned karate in the title, but TKD in the message...

          Peace,
          Sei

I am taking TKD. I joined the black belt club so I can train with weapons too. When I get my black belt in TKD I plan on taking akido or BJJ, then maybe get a job as a bouncer.

                It is Songahm Takewondo.

I am also a member of a local gym. Does anyone know of a good work out routine to help me with speed, agility, and endurance?
I have been running at least a mile a day to help my endurance.

                  Wecome the ATA then

I've been in the ATA since the early 80's and I have worked out with most of the senior masters. The system has a lot of value and some of the instructors are truely great.

                  Good Luck with your training.

The main reason I am doing this is to try to stay in shape, and to learn some defensive moves. If time/money permitting, Ill compete in a few tournaments.

TKD or ATA is as good a hobby as any,but I do haft to warn you, from the places I've seen and been to (ATA I'll leave TKD alone for now.) ATA has no defnsive purpose at all. If you get into a real fight forget 90% of everything you learned.

                          No, better I'm asuming

Gracie Fan just to let you know. Although I find about half of the ATA instructors lacking in skill, ability and knowledge the system itself actually has quite a bit to offer.

Including the groundfighting system which is a Gracie JJ ripoff. At one time ATA was in negotiations to integrate with Gracies in the USA. I'm not sure about the rest of the world. I don't know what ever happened to that but they did add the JJ to the system. They also have a decent system of stand up if they train properly. unfortunately most of the schools teach only for profit and for tournaments.

You have to keep the parents happy if you want to bring in the money.

They by far have the best marketing system I have seen in the MA world. If you want to make money and teach it's the most professional system going bar none.

Not that I wouldn't agree with you about much of the ATA as it has changed over the last 20 years quite a bit. But if you are going to train TKD it's the best going.

Since it has some weapons work that have silat and kali influences, Didn't have a clue that it did until I trained with a Kali and Silat instructor. It has ground fighting. Most school allow integration of other systems through the use of outside instructors i forget what they call them. Tournment circuit is closed so it is fair. Judges know what you are doing and can judge accordingly. ATA member can compete in open tournaments as well. It is also to continue training almost anywhere in the USA and also in europe, korea, south america, and canada.

But comercialization is taking it's toll as instructors skills are rapidly degrading and very few instructors have been around more that 5 or six years. Most of the masters have crosstrained and are great if you get a chance to work out with them.
Most school are starting to offer Krav Maga as well for those people who want more contact and simpiler systems of combat with more conditioning.
