    martial arts battles

to say from my experience in sparring against martial artist, the most unorthodox i have is against a capoeira artist... if you want something different give it a shot.

What was it like sparring with a capoiera stylist? From what I've seen, its all kicks. Do they have any punches?

I used to spar with some kung fu guys that tried to use authentic kung fu techniques (not kickboxing) in sparring. I even tried it myself when I trained in it. What also got me was because some of the attacks were so unorthodox and come from wierd angles. Mind you, a lot of the attacks did seem ineffective. I remember one guy throwing "crane beak" attacks on my arm!?!?

This is a good post. Has anyone else sparred with a martial artist that is quite unorthodox in nature?

i train in Krav Maga and BJJ, and one of my instructors in BJJ also did muay thai, many of the KM students are boxers. I find that defending against each group difficult, but the technique to defend was not so hard. But trying to attack someone of different styles was the most difficult. In KM the hands are further out, while in MT the hands are closer (modern, not trad. MT).

I was doing some stand up-->ground fighting with one of my BJJ instructors and oyu learn pretty quickly, that adaptation is the key. Forget bob and weave.

We all have our personal style. We fight just a little differently we all have our weaknesses and strengths. I like staying in there while my opponent is trying to hit me making him miss. I do allot of side stepping too, but I have a short reach for my size and find that just with a half step to the side I can make them miss. However I’m to far away to hit them. Of course they are still close enough to hit me with a follow up shot.

Here’s the scenario: guy moves in to jab I step out with right foot (back leg) 45’ to my right I parry block the jab no problem right? Wrong, I then throw a left jab of my own that barley reaches his chin Because he’s just a little to far But I get caught with his right cause I’m not to far for him. I’m good at getting out of the way. I make him miss this way. But then I’m in no position to nail him.

Ok now let’s take the same scenario as above. He comes in and jabs. I step out with right foot (back leg) 45’ to my right I parry block the jab Now I step slightly towards him to get in range he throws his follow up right And I duck beneath it (bob) catch him with a left hook. Better huh?

Scenario three. Same as above. Opponent jabs this time I don’t move my feet. I slip the jab. Now since he moved in to throw the jab He’s close enough to land my own jab. Also he throws the right I duck beneath it (bob) catch him with a left hook or even a right of my own. See more combination possibilities for me.

Yes I’m well aware of other things I can do (techniques movements etc) per the above scenarios but this was just the basic examples I’m using.

Now I’m not saying it’s all that easy and works 100% of the time but that’s why I need to practice. You might fight a totally different way and that’s a100% okay. Like I said we all have our Personal style. This works well for me so it’s what I like to do.

We all have deferent physical attributes that may dictate how we can do things such as fight. I’m 5’11” 210 with short arm and short legs. I can’t fight like someone who is 5’11” with long arms and legs or 6’4” with long arms and legs. In my weight division I find I have to fight guys that out reach me with both arms and legs. However I have ways of dealing with it. Get in deep stay deep and try to make them miss me as much as I can while I work my techniques.

I'd rather not answer that question in the way the question is begging because I don't want to step on anyone's toes, etc.
Instead I'll say this. Out of those three, it was Paul who hurt me the most! LOL

Rickson and Carlos Machado were always amazing to me because of their ability to be so smooth and technical with whatever they were doing. It seemed like they never NEVER wasted any more energy than was necessary for them during a sparring session. Rickson especially, but I didn't train with him that much. A few times back when I was a teenager.

Paul can enter on you at will and blast you. You can't stop him. LOL.
The funny thing about him is that he has a much better ground game than he lets on. Rolling full speed with him is pretty amazing. But Paul will do things other grapplers won't. At least not in training.
I have to admit that I didn't give Kino Mutai enough credit. There were times where I would get him down with either kesa gatame, mount, or yokoshihogatame. Where everyone else I've rolled with would struggle or use technique to try and escape my pins and subs, Paul bit me! Not horribly, but enough to make me freak out..... I consider myself a pretty good grappler, but I lost position at least 5 times with that shit! And there's nothing I could do. To all the grapplers who say "I'll just punch him if he bites me!" ........uh uh ......not this kind of thing LOL.
            It really is interesting.
He also has incredibly strong leg muscles. He can hang from a thai bag with his legs for up to 45 minutes.
When he gets you in guard.....he can literally break your ribs by just squeezing....
            It's no joke.

                capoeira

swan 104,... in regards to caporiera to having punching skills, no ...punching is almost non existant, but they do use headbutts , elbows and knees in close range. the trick for me was to get into close range, their footwork (jinga) is decieving. if you ever go against one, you have to rush in quick as to get them out of their range (kicks). they like to also use a front thrust kick followed by a spin kick. I have also been trying to find someone who has sparred against the art, and share tips with me as well. as for experience ive learned its easy to talk about some arts as non effective, but getting in the water with em' is not always easy to swim. i learned a good lesson " there is no such thing as a bad art, just artists" .....keep blasting, lee.

competition in my opinion is to safe. I would also like the chance to test my skills in full on combat. No protective clothing, no ref no nothing.

Sod, check out the thread called 'aikido in real life situations'. Disucssion/points of view from MMA, karate, bjj and aikido about aikido and its effectiveness. As a form of competitive, toe to toe MA, we ruled out its effectiveness. However, in situations where you are not allowed to inflict bodily harm (Bouncer, School Teacher, Corrections officer...sometimes), aikido has good restraining techniques.

Let's say an associate of your's becomes unfriendly when drunk and wants to fight another associate of yours. Do you throw a rear leg round house at his thigh? a left hook at his jaw? No way! what if he's a good buddy of yours. Better to control his head andhis direction to get him to the other room for a cup of coffee.

Sorry if I'm being blunt, but why not bypass Aikido and just use groundfighting to restrain this friend or relative? BJJ works on resisting opponents, and it won't get you punched in the eye by your overzealous drunk buddy (unlike locking their wrist--even if you do manage to make it work, they are standing and pissed when you let them go, and buddy or no buddy, they will want to pop you one).

                          Good point.

I don't mean a wrist lock. The police use them on willing subjects to put the cuffs on. If you were a middle school teacher and you were going to break up a fight between two kids, you could use it without the kids parents pressing charges; any teacher will tell you that parents in more affluent areas are more likely to blame teachers if anything bad happens to their kid whether he/she starts the fight or not. Better to control an instigator by seizing them. BJJ standup teaches a few good control techniques, remember?

A technique that will control his head will probably also control his body. I've never studied aikido, so I am not familiar with the techniques of aikido head/neck control; I know of a few techniques in hapkido and stand up bjj. If all else fails, you could clinch and swing him away.

Going to the ground right away is an option. I wouldn't want to bang him up with a fall onto the hard ground, but as a pre-emptive measure I don't see why not.
