What is the pan-am games?

I here alot of talk about the pan-am games but im not really clear on what it is. Can someone give me a breif overview of what happens, where at and when?

The Pan-Ams are a short form for the Pan-American games.

They are held every four years, and country's that represent
are from both North and South America.

This year the host country is the Dominican Republic. It's being
held in Santo Domingo.

I just noticed the jui jitsu pan-ams are being held in California,
I'm not really sure what relation the one's being held in Cali
have with the games in DR. Anyone know?
