  • Karate-do as a religeon?

Karate is not just punching, kicking and shouting. It is an art and any karateka believe it to be a religeon or a way of life.

I dont know what to think, any advice?

Martial arts including Karate-do have not ever been thought to be a religion by any great number of people.

Often martial arts have been included into the practice of religion though. There is a difference.

Religion by it's nature is a belief system with a doctrine and usually a belief in a power or order above ones own existence.
Karate-do is closer to a philosophy of living rather than a religion. there is a big difference.

    Christianity
    Islam
    Hinduism

    are religions.

    Science
    Confucism
    Hedonist

    are philosophy

Buddism started off as a philosophy but morphed into a religion over time with the deification of Buddah

I'm not sure what Taoist is considered now. I think it is still classified as a philosophy.

Martial arts have been conbined with Buddism and Taoism and even christianity. But the Art was never considered the religion it may be considered a type of moving prayer, a type of meditation, or expression of religious belief but not the belief itself.

"Do" implies way. or way of living. Often religions also associate with "Do" as far as a way of path.

This does not mean that both are religions.

    There are also "do"

such as merchant, political, farmer. This implies that pursuit as a way of life.

Wasn't Krishnamurti (and students of JKD) against the establishment of institiutions and encapsulating beliefs into one?

The way I see, everything can be seen as a way of life. Relaxing in a pool all day long can also be considered, "a way of life." It's just how you interpret that activity.

Karate as a religion is also bad because it means you are worshipping something that doesn't exist. What is the religion of Karate? If you break it down, then all it is is human motion.

No afterlife you will be reincarnated as the biggest bad ass around
Darn tennis no longer a religion, oh so that's why they stopped waring white clothes

Karate nor any other Martial art is religion, we bow out of respect nothing else, Martial Arts can be a way of life though (look at how some adjust everything to training and competing like some of the brazilian top fighters

We could use a lot more "relaxing in a pool"-ism in our society. It might decrease the phenomena known as obsessive-compulsive behavior.
