  • There is only one art that works

I just watched the Brazilian Vale Tudo fighting tapes #5 and #6 back to back. If you never seen them..there are alot of matches! Each tape has 4 weight classes and in each weight class its a 4 fight tournament so each tape has four full tournaments on it..that is ALOT of fights.

If you haven't seen these tapes. They are very professional produced by federico lapenda. It is not a gracie backed marketing strategy. They are extremely UN-biased towards any style. You see guys advertising themselves as just about everything under the sun..You had, jiu-jitsu, capoiera, tae kwon do, muay thai, chinese boxing,
karate, kung fu, luta livre, and something called sipalki-do.

The funny thing is that no matter what style the guy said he was..when the fight was on..it went straight to the ground and every one was grappling real well.

If I group every single match together in a percentage group. There was only 1 fight that ended standing up with strikes resulting in a knockout. There was 1 fight that ended with the takedown resulting in a knockout. Out of the rest of all the fights 75% ended with the rear choke,
13% ended in leg locks, 7% in armlocks and 5% in striking on the ground from mount till they gave up.

That really spells out JIU-JITSU to me! and whats more, In every single weight class and tournament that had a guy who called himself jiu-jitsu..had the jiu-jitsu guy win, except for one, the jiu-jitsu guy won the whole thing, and the one they didn't,..they made it to the final match and the match was stopped..losing to a luta livre guy.

If I group the styles together in order of best showing it would look something like this.

    1-jiu-jitsu
    2-luta-livre
    3-muay thai
    4-boxing
    5-full contact/freestyle
    6-capoiera
    7-chinese boxing
    8-sipalki-do
    9-kung fu
    10-tae kwon do.

The jiu-jitsu obviously had the best showing and best looking takedowns and groundwork..but it really is stupid because every single fighter was grappling jiu-jitsu. Why would you call yourself..capoiera or chinese boxing and then run in get a takedown and get mount. Its stupid..jiu-jitsu is the only art that works!

    75% lost to rear choke..damn!

A lot of people already know this, and those who don't agree will call you a troll. Bad choice for a post unless it garners positive response. Which I doubt

Today is the first day of Jiu Jitsu after taking a week off, I'm gonna get killed

        whatever.

i saw a karate-kicking wrestler knock a "jiu jitsu" fighter the f@ck out just the other day.

        Crosstraing works in todays envirnonment.

        Single style, sure, jiu jitsu.

        best style, crosstraining.

        duh.

I notice Wrestling wasn't listed. Brazil doesn't seem to have a lot of good Wrestlers. Maybe because of the dominance of BJJ.

Wrestling is the best anti-BJJ style, IMO, because they can resist the takedown and control position on the ground. Sakuraba's wrestling is what helped him to defeat the Gracies, esp. Royce. Wrestlers have offensive and defensive grappling skills that most other fighters lack.

                    agreed on the wrestling.

bjjers should not neglect wrestling and standup.

                          you are greatly exaggerating

I have a bunch of old Vale Tudos on tape as well and i have to say that your description is a bit of an exaggeration. Obviously, the fights do go to the ground quite often and anyone who wants to last ten seconds in such an event must learn some grappling skills. But to say that nothing but Bjj was shown by all the fighters is ridiculous. The thing is that they are all crosstrained. I didn't hear you criticizing all the Bjj guys for throwing thai kicks. And I saw many fights that spent plenty of time in stand up. And I WAS able to recognize style in many fighters. The Sipalki-do guys you mentioned seem to be pretty good with high kicks. The Chinese boxing guys used plenty of striking and throwing technique characteristic of their style (FYI, the art of takedowns was not invented solely by Bjj). hell, I even remember a TKD guy landing a couple good TKD-esque kicks before he lost. Not to mention plenty of muay thai and boxing going around as well. The only fighters I saw who didn't seem able to depend on their specific skills at all were the karate guys. And from the tapes I have, i see freestyle/luta livre guys winning just as much as jiu jitsu guys. There was even a Chinese boxing guy who won in his weight class.

Again and again we repeat the age old mantra "it is the fighter not the style." Has it also occured to you since BJJ is more popular in Brazil than the other arts, and the tournament being in Brazil, a lot more BJJ guys went opposed to the other arts?
