  • How many techniques for Blue Belt

    Hello,

I was wondering how many techniques are required for a white belt to learn before they can test for their blue belt in bjj? Thanks

I'll tell you how it works at the straightblast gym. I'm sure it is pretty similar at other schools. At our gym when you can grapple competitively using technique and not strength with other blue belts then you are one. There is no test or knowledge requirement. It is all performance based. It wouldn't work any other way!

      DOUBLEOUCH IS QUITE RIGHT

And thats how it should be "performance/ability" related.

not how many moves you think you know,
or how many lessons you have attended,
or how many kata's you know.

The belt should indicate your PROVEN ability.

I have seen white belts in karate be able to easily beat much higher belts and even beat brown belts.

It makes a mockery of the karate belt system !

damn in my school u gotta know it all..

and you have to show the teach u r ready and dedicated to the gym. or you won't do it..

you have to wrestle the whole school .. one after another after another.. i've seen students throw up, pass out, give up..

then you still have to do push ups after it's all done..

demintrate arm bars, sweeps, tominagis and few others throws, and just basic instuctions.

they you crawl and grab the blue belt with your mouth..

I'd like to do BJJ but there's no where near me that does it. Is tomanagi where you roll backwards and throw them with your leg? I believe you can also do a variation with your leg between their legs and sort of throw them by their groin. Or is that just me?

Yeah, it should be performance based although I've heard of people who test for their blue belt in some schools. I can't speak for belts in other arts but in bjj I've never seen a white belt toy with a purple belt, or even give them any problem whatsoever. Sometimes if a white belt is heavier and stronger than a blue belt he may be able to give him a hard time but in general, there is a reason why each person wears the belt they do.
