And Spanky does have a point but when someone attacks you the last thing on your mind is where’s my lawyer?
As with other things you have to keep in mind, you better be thinking about it.

As my associate Yenhoi illustrated brilliantly, this is simply another Micky Mouse (TM) 'what if' thread.

They will be trying to take your head off, and you should be giving it back in kind and them some.
Tend to disagree. Against your average pisshead down the pub, all out aggression will usually win. Against someone who knows what they're doing, as well as knows what you're doing, you will go down.

I can completely turn your above comments around. the number of times I've seen someone swinging like a madman walk straight into a nice clean strike to end the fight. Personally I would use your aggression and momentum against you.

There's a big difference in being completely aggressive and just swinging away. The former will save you a lot more often than sitting back to counterpunch (which is unsafe in the first place).

Obviously aggression is needed. I think it's more dangerous to commit yourself to aggressive attacks without observing your opponent first. Personally I find it more effective to counter. Your strikes will generally find an unguarded opponent as opposed to flurries taken on the hands and arms of your opponent whi si covbering up or backing off.

How do you know that you will be albe to counter? What if the first shot that looked like a straight puch was a knife? Dead. What if the guy throwing at you is a boxer? Lights out. Attacking by drawing is a sparring concept, not a self-defense method. Hit first, fast, hard, and repteatedly. That's one of the only etched in stone rules of SD. Secondly, people don't square off in real life. When was the last time a fight in a bar looked like a boxing match? The entire idea of observing the opponont is extremely flawed. To paraphrase Kelly McCann, if you wait for confirmation of an assault, it will usually come as a form of injury to you.

what if, what if, yawn. We could "whatif" each other for the rest of the day.

the fact remains there are various ways to tackle a fight. In the end it's going to come down to skill. Skill to attack, skill to counter-attack. how you chose to go about this is up to you.

As for hitting fast, hard and repeatedly, well duh. that doesn't mean you have to be the first cab of the rank. persoanlly I'd rather throw a combination at someone moving towards me than someone moving away. the fight will be over quicker and you'll expend less energy chasing them.

Uh, not really. Less often than you might think, in fact. "What-if's," when they are reasonable, are extremely important to contemplate. Do it or pay the price for being shortsighted.

Here is a small list of factors that a fight can come down to:
                1) clothing
                2) state of mind
                3) viciousness
                4) surprise
                5) luck
                6) skill
                7) size
                8) strength
                9) weapon(s)
                10) friends
                11) environment

The list goes on forever. Martial skill alone is a very small factor in the equation.

that doesn't mean you have to be the first cab of the rank
I assume that this means being the first one to throw a shot. And you are wrong. This alone matters the most of all.

persoanlly I'd rather throw a combination at someone moving towards me than someone moving away. the fight will be over quicker and you'll expend less energy chasing them.
I'd like to throw a combination when the other guy has his hands down, his chin up, and his chest out. I'm done debating this.

Your theory that there is only one way to effectively win a fight shows your ignorance anyway. It will be a pleasure to put this to bed.

Of course there's more than one way to win. My way just happens to be a lot safer than yours. I enjoy the way you ignore my points. It paints you in a very good light.

i think you'll find i agreed with several of your points, most of which are basic principles of combat and could have been left out altogether. If you are not going to even read what i am writing then we are both wasting our time.

You have different opinions, neither of you are going to change them. You are both accusing each other of not reading threads. Just agree to disagree.

Spanky I agree with you. I guess I’m old fashion in my thinking that we have a right to self preservation; and all those damn law makers and lawyers can just go to hell. We still have the right to self defense.

What I worry about is civil suits from injuring the guy that had gotten beat up. Civil court is fickle they may not care who started the fight. In my experience criminal charges are rare when a fist fight (no weapons used) breaks out between two people, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I do think about legal trouble. I have de-escalated many potential fights by talking the guy down. However when attacked I defended myself and let the chips fall where they may. Defending yourself comes first.

And as for Mickey Mouse threads the good thing about them is you don’t have to waste your time with them. You can always go on to the next thread.

"What if" thread? Excuse me but actualy I think you'll find this is a "How useful are blocks and dodges in a real life situation?" thread. If you don't like it then stop posting on it. All I wanted was the chance to learn from people more experienced than me.
