    You are hurting because you are weak

    If you expect to be able to take hard punches to the stomach you must develop your deep inner core muscles. this takes a lot of work and commitment. Your deep inner core muscles support your entire body. I do lots of slow crunches and leg lifts. Conditioning and breathing take time to learn and develop as with anything, patience is the key.

      Right below the sternum? That is definitly a solar plexus shot. I bet it was pretty painful. I agree with Great Sage though, the key to making your abs stronger is simply put, building your abs. Do alot of crunches and medicine ball situps.
