There is one major and im afraid obvious difference.

The back and back of the head are simply a target.

Pulling your punches or landing the punch is about skill, i mean skill in the terms that its something that develops with practice.

You find that if you practice to just miss your footwork is always just out and your range is never quite right when you try full contact, thats not to say you wont land punches its just harder.

Do you get my point, one is a target, thats easy to change mentally, the other a skill, when on autopilot your body will go with with what you know and id rather hit consistently to the front and not remember to go for the back than miss altogether.

Would like to add, i dont know where you do Muay Thai but where i do it attacks to the back are trained regularly although they are not allowed in the ring we do them in sparring quite often at with the higher levels also holding th back of the head whilst punching and elbowing the face etc.

No what I don't get it that some of these people basically act like Aikido is some kind of childs martial art or something. We were a pretty open school and we invited all different kinds of arts in to train and spar with us. Although we did not use many kicks and punches in training we are not discouraged from striking in the least (some styles of Aikido do somewhat frown on punches and kicks). Regardless I also said that I try to train in many different arts. I have taken Shorin-ryu for a couple years while in Aikido and then when I started jumping around I tried TKD, TSD, MT, Shotokan, Hapkido, and several different styles of Japanese martial arts. I don't care what style you take or what country it came from if you fight someone that takes Aikido and they take your balance you can't fight. Most of the stuff in the begining is kinda lame but when you get down to the advanced hand to hand and joint manipulation techniques you learn how to stop a fight with one movement (whether it be breaking the other guys wrist or breaking his leg). See that is the problem with people in martial arts they always think what they take is the best and what the other person takes isn't all that good.

To tell you the truth I don't think any martial art out there is the best and that is why I finally decided to take as many different arts as I could to learn as much as I can.

Like I said I spent about 13-14yrs. in Aikido and about 5yrs. while I was taking Aikido I was also training in Shorin-ryu. I have also tried Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Hapkido, Shotokan, Ishin-ryu, Judo, MT, and couple other things. Most of them would only last for a month or so, the only ones I have ever stuck with was Aikido, Shorin-ryu, and now BJJ.

One month does not really qualify you to comment on Muay Thai does it.

I train with a guy that has done MT for about 15yrs. everyday man. The guy is in my BJJ class and we have sparred on several occasions. He has come to me several times wanting me to teach him Aikido techniques.

coming from the guy whose goal in life is to study Krav Maga, what are you going to do for the rest of the afternoon, you should be qualified to teach by lunch time!!

Well I guess it works both ways cuz if I am not qualified enough to talk about MT cuz I only took it for a couple months then you would not be qualified to talk about Aikido considering that you have probably never even seen a person face to face that does Aikido.

"We have a guy in my BJJ class that has a black belt in TKD and was a MT kickboxer and just using stuff that I learned from Aikido and Shorin-ryu I can beat him consistently"

Good for you but it proves nothing. There have been several arguments on all the subject of all arts being equal. They are not all equal.

Why did you spend 14 years learning aikido? What motivated you to spend so much time and effort (not to mention money)?

Yes, just as Muay Thai was created for men certain other arts were created for women or even GIRLS.
