Strong abs will help with your lifting.
As usual, Biker is dead on. A strong trunk (abdomen and lower back) will provide maximum support in just about everything else you do.

Just don't overdo it because ab/lower back injuries are nasty and can result in a looooooooooooong recover time. They can also come back to haunt you in the years to come.

Oh, and don't train abs before you do your regular lifting. Doing abs first makes them weaker during your workout and decreases your lifting ability.

Agreed. Go get some professional training from somebody who knows what they're doing. Just don't get stuck with a McTrainer.
