It is interesting to note the two differentiating factors in Australian BJJ. Prominant exponents in Australia for their respective BJJ academies demonstrate different dimensions to their methods, usually explained under the contexts following:
Drills and submission as a training base - sourced from here The Machado system of BJJ is geared toward the submission or the 'finish' of the fight. We enjoy the sporting aspect of BJJ, but are a little more interested in 'the finish' than are some other BJJ practitioners. Some BJJ coaches are more oriented toward the sporting aspect, in which points are awarded for position, if no finish should occur. These guys are good also though; good positional control is an absolute must if one wishes to master BJJ.
Control as a focus - sourced from here You will notice that techniques are not drilled religiously nor do they form the basis of the training. This is quite strange for nearly all martial arts. Instead, you will be taught concepts that govern the very purpose for which techniques can and should be applied. Control concepts, positioning concepts and defence concepts are passed onto the student in early training and reinforced throughout training. These concepts will form the foundation for Jiu Jitsu at the highest level.
Is this the state of BJJ globally?
