tsd
I know a girl who got her black belt in Tang Soo Do and she couldn't fight her way out of a wet paper bag. Really sad. I have another friend who got his black belt in TSD while going to college. He took the classes 2 times a week for 3 years and got his black belt before he left. He was pretty good, but he is a good athlete, still can't compete with BJJ.
If you are a natural fighter and in good shape, then if you get your BB in a traditional MA you may be tough. If you aren't a fighter, then you can have you 3rd degree BB and still be a totaly pussy(esp in no/low contact MAs). In BJJ, if you are a black belt, you are a bad ass on the ground, PERIOD!! You won't get your BB by showing up to class and paying your dues each month. You need to be tough mentally and physically. You need to study and compete.
I think one big difference is that almost everyone knows how punch and kick to some degree. Almost no one knows what to do on the ground, who doesn't have training. You can throw some haymakers and jabs, but you can't make shit up on the ground.

ok. your questions are: "do you need a balck belt to teach jiujitsu" and "why does it take so long to get a black belt"?
no. it is acceptable for a purple belt to open a school. generally, they do so under the attention of a black belt. they can promote white belts to blue belt. for promotion to higher belts (purple, brown), you need to be trained by a black belt.
it takes a long time to get a black belt, because it takes a very long time to become proficient at all the positions and transitions necessary to be a compotent competitor and instructor. consider this... if you magically got every technique right, the night it was demonstrated for the first time, you would still need to attend a couple thousand classes.
needless to say... most don't get it right the first several times they try a technique.
hope this helps you a bit.
thanks.
