  • aikido and steven seagal

I hear a lot of people tell me that aikido is a spiritual art, but when seagal does aikido it seems to throw me off a bit knowing the the moves he uses can seriously do some damage (im referring to the ones in his movies, but I get the feeling whatever he does in his movies, he can surely do in real life, thats my opinion anyways)...in your opinion, do you think seagal and his aikido skills give aikido a bad name being that aikido is supposed to be a spiritual art for most? could they work in a street fight against like 3 or 4 attackers? I dont know who has seen that almost 3 minute video footage of seagal when he was younger, but he was throwing his students around like it was no big deal...I was really amazed at what I seen in the video...seems like seagal has his own brand of aikido and he has the type of mentality that can make aikido really effective...

I have no clue about Segal's fighting ability. He could very well be an extremely effective aikidoka.

If he enters UFC or Pride, we'll find out. Who knows?? Has he done any work in security???

Sounds funny, but the folks who watched UFC for the first time thought Royce Gracie would get beaten by Pro-Boxer Art Jimmerson and run over by Ken Shamrock. I would say the average person's perception about fighting effectiveness is foggy. So, the only way to find out is if he trains for and enters an established fighting circuit.

Until that happens, all talk is speculation.

      ewod,

First of all, you need to separate fantasy from reality. I’m telling you this so that you don’t end bruised and beaten to a pulp — movie martial arts and real martial arts ARE NOT the same. When you figure this out, it doesn’t matter what anyone tells you. However, the fact that you associate movie fights with real fights tells me you have no knowledge of real martial arts or combat.

Demonstrations are just that, demonstrations... They do not reflect true combat which is sloppy and uncertain. Aikido, like any martial art, thrives on theories... Theoretically, in the martial arts, if you performed the correct manuever/technique at the correct time, place, etc... you could defeat an army. Theorectically, that is... In actuality, you don’t have the time, space or capacity to take down multiple opponents.

In conclusion, although people tend to associate martial arts with certain individuals, e.g. Bruce Lee – Kung-fu, a person’s actions speak for themselves. I don’t believe that many people see Steven Seagal as the authoritive or epitome of Aikido. Steven, like many stars, is his own ego.

Whether or not Seagal enters the UFC or not will prove nothing.

Anything you see in the movies is carefully coreographed.

Aikido is splintered into different groups with different focus areas. Just like every other art.

Look at JKD, BJJ, and even the RBSD. Each training group has adifferent focus. Some are still pretty close, while others are miles apart.

So no, the Ponytail isn't giving Aikido a bad name.... unless of course you're thickheaded.

I believe he was a bodyguard for some hollywood people before he made it big in the movies...

I know they are not the same, but im guessing whatever he can do onscreen, he could maybe do it in real life...I have a fair knowledge of martial arts, so dont tell me what I know...im just saying that whatever he does onscreen, he could probably do in real life...

Okay, Ace... Do you understand what a contradiction is? First, you say you know the difference between reality and choreographed fighting, then you go back and say that the choreographed fighting sequences can work in real-life...

Futhermore, where's the logic in your statements? By your logic, Steven Seagal can kick butt on screen, therefore, he must be tough in person... Or, Steven Seagal techniques can man-handle multiple opponents, therefore, they can also be effective on the streets... This type of thinking after you claim to know the difference between reality and fiction? Come on, kid...

you are correct sir, I do know the difference between reality and choreographed fighting...I do believe that some choreographed fighting could work in real life...I have seen real life footage of mr. seagal throwing people around like he does in his films...no, he doesnt actually break their bones like he does to his enemies in his movies, but he does throw them around like he does in his films...steven seagal can kick butt because he has a 7th degree dan in aikido...have a good day sir...

although fiction and reality are 2 sepreate things, most of us here can recognize a good martial artist on the screen, we could al see that what was done in the karatekid was crap most of us know we would eat Keanu Reeves alive
                          But real skills still show
Let's face it one aikidoka will be able to use it it will probably by Segal both on screen and off screen his aikido is short and powerfull

In Wado we hade a wristturn too ( kote gaeshi) but I changed the larger circle into bending the writst and pulling it agaunst your bellyslightly below the navel, now my hand do not do the real work the hips are

did I ever use it in real life no but neither did I end up on the ground whereas others seem to have a lot ( seeing the fact that every MMAists seem to stress the importance of groundfighting)

At least segal looks more valid than Jean Claude van Damme ( except for some of his bull stories )

So I sligtly support Ewod if anyone can make an art with 6 throws work it's probably him

Oh for all you groundfighters forget a hollywood carreer, collyflowerears just aren't doing it

thanks man, atleast someone understands what im trying to say... what bull stories are you referring to? working with the cia? I dont think the cia would mind having an excellent aikidoka like seagal doing a few side jobs for them...

SS is 300+ lbs now. Some of us have had the misfortune of seeing some of his more recent movies were the fight choreography is godawful because he is to slow to do anything anymore. And then we have frightening wardrobe decisions in his recent movies. Where does he buy those jackets?! Seriously, Seagal looks about as credible these days as David Carridine did in those new Kung Fu TV shows, which is to say, totally lame. Fortunately, Tarrantino took pitty on DC and will turn him into a badass in Kill Bill (at least he'll have good lines, something Seagal never had because he writes that crap himself...). And, hey, any movie with Uma Thurman running around with a samurai sword and Lucy Liu playing an assassin has got to be amazing. But I digress....

Lets not forget Seagal got choked out by Gene Lebell when Seagal was still thin and Lebell was like 60-something. I mean Lebell is a badass and all, but if Seagal was so good a 60 year old judoka/wrestler isn't going to be able to choke him out. Right? Notice that Seagal NEVER gets beat up in his movies. Every other action hero gets beat up. Just shows how insecure Seagal is about his own abilities. Also, he's got a high ranking and all, but lets not forget that he sort of slept his way to it, marrying the daughter of a high ranked aikidoka so they'd let his white ass in the door of the dojo. Then he got his belt, had a couple kids, dumped his wife and moved off to California and left her with no child support. I think he's actually cheated on every woman he's ever been with and he was abusive with Kelly LeBrock (at least that's what they said on the E! documentary...). So basically I think Lebell should have choked him out and then cut his nuts off. Who cares if he's a badass if he walks out on his own children?
