          Judo Guy:

I am a big Gore supporter, but I'm starting to agree with you. Settle the issue by next Tuesday, or throw the damn votes out. One way or the other, when the absentee ballots come in, Gore is going to lose.

Masala your logic cuts both ways. If Gore concedes now he will be in great position to run in 2004 after four years of gridlock, esp. with Lieberman staying in the Senate. I would rather have that, than a Gore victory tainted by accusations of cheating.

Sometimes you can lose by winning, and win by losing. I think this is an example of what I mean. I think the loser now will be a big winner later, and vice versa.

Therefore, when the manual re-count is finished, and the absentee ballots counted, Gore should concede. Right now he is grasping at straws.

            Gents,

The excitement continues. Actually, I doubt that it will last much longer that another week. Popular opinion wants a fair election and recount, but not indefinite.

I think that Bush suit is a tactical mistake and cedes the moral highground. Also, they look afraid of the result.

Another interesting point: NM has been recounted and Bush may win, and some of this recount was done by HAND! This looks bad for the suit.

Texas passed a voting law the GW signed in 1997 that allows for manual recounts in close elections and GW is of record saying something like manual recounts are the best thing. This is going to make the suit look a bit hypocritical and self-serving.

Heck, it is such a close election, why not manually recount all of the ballots in the real close states? If it only takes a few weeks, what is the friggin hurry?

I would prefer the most accurate recount, not the swiftest recount!

              Eazy:

That it is a good point too.

But if Gore loses Florida after all the ballots are counted he should concede right then and there, not continue to mount legal challenge after legal challenge.

I have a certain amount of patience, but it is not inexhaustible, and I do not want Gore to damage his long-term chances of winning the presidency. This is just one election. The candidates are acting like it is for all the marbles. At some point one of them has to have the dignity and common sense to bow out gracefully.

I don't see why this lawsuit looks so bad for Bush? It is a bit ridiculous to use a standardless system to tabulate votes based on subjective factors that are obviously VERY susceptible to biases and agendas.

Not to mention the GROSS injustice in the Gore camp's concluding that it's only necessary to hand recount 4 selected counties that are highly democratic and guaranteed to aid Gore if it changes anything at all. WHat the hell is just about THAT???

JG made the point that it should be done in all counties or none, first of all. I think THAT is the real point that Bush makes. But the preferred path is to avoid doing it anywhere, since there is NO evidence that it creates a more accurate count, and in fact it is really guaranteed to merely create a more volitile result, since political agendas will rule the subjective judgments.

So, there is nothing wrong with a lawsuit that says "Let's NOT do it, b/c if we do it we have to do it EVERYWHERE, and that is time consuming, frustrating, and ultimately adds NOTHING to the process."--So the alternative is not to do it at all, which renders an equally accurate, or MORE accurate result anyway. (If non-subjective accuracy, untainted by politic agenda--the REAL voice of the people- is what you care about.)

We have to remember that it is in Gore's interest to opt for ANY POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE to accepting the current count. It is NOT AT ALL about getting the voice of the people heard. Give it up, and if you are that naive, then you are probably one of the folks who couldn't figure out what the ballot meant. LOL

If they said an alternative method is to go to an astrologer to get the results, then Gore would try to do THAT also, and claim that it was for the good of the people...The alternative to this effort of trying ANYTHING AT ALL is a LOSS for Gore. So throw it all out there....and then send out a bunch of pols to explain that it is for "The People". And believe it or not, some sorry saps buy into it.

Come on folks. We're smarter than that.

Bush says he trusts people not government, yet reverses himself completely when the idea of a hand count presents itself? When he authorized the same type of remedy three years ago in his state?

Republicans constantly crow about how the federal government should be shrunk and states' rights to government themselves are sacred, yet they're in court trying to overturn Florida law, arguing now that Florida doesn't know what's good for Florida. Ironic, considering that Jeb Bush is the governor.

Make no mistake people, the Republican party has only two interests that override any interest of this nation: gaining power by any means necessary and destroying Democrats. From Monica to Whitewater to goverment shutdowns to Florida, there is no limit to the amount of burden they're willing to place on this nation, because they put the interest of their party above their interests as Americans.

James Baker on television essentially saying: people are too stupid to manually recount votes. Nice. Any non-GOP person there is going to try and fraudulently elect Gore. Very nice. They've managed to insult just about everybody who's not them, which is no surprise to any of us who see right through them. James Baker furthering still the notion that no non-GOP person can be ethical and reasonable. There can be nobody who's right on the other side.

The hypocrisy is absolutely mind-blowing; to even think they wouldn't do the same thing were the situation reversed is fantasy.

They should go ahead with the recount anyway in the close states--WTF are they waiting for? If Bush won, then he's president, period. Forget the re-vote; that's a pandora's box. If these hand recounts elect Bush, then as much as I despise him (er I mean president Dick Cheney) I 100% support his right to take office.

But whoever said it above is right: what you see now is what really operates and motivates the GOP.

Oh, what a load of crap.

I like George Bush. He's good people... got some values, good values... family values. People with families value family values, so we're just here evaluating how familyable we can be, while enjoying some great Texas steaks.

The people of this great nation know what's right, what's good, what's the ethnicalable thing for them. So in the past few days Dick and I have been keeping Americans well informed while forming our intentions, under which the average American family will save $100,000 in taxes.

We just wanna get out there and let the American people know that they're a good people. A clean people. They're people like us, who clean themselves. And that's a right that's foremostly on our minds as we prepare to transuriate into the White House. It's the will of the people. And people I talk to often say to me: "Governor, I'm for you and my family values are for you. We're a clean people and we think Gore should concede and save this great nation from being weak in a time when values should be on top. We love our country and we clean our country which makes us happy because under your tax plan we stand to save $58,000 this year, and that's just for our teenage son."

So the American people are sending a message: they're saying "We are people with American values and we don't like it when people count votes by hand. We're Christians and therefore we want machines, because machines won't subvertify the bible." So Dick and I quite possibly could be... people... with values about machines. I'm sure they're good machines, machines with values. Which is why we should trust them in this hard-fought freedom which we as Americans enjoy.

Now, I grew up simple--a Texas boy with values--but we didn't have a lot of machines on the ranch, unless they were being driven by Mexicans. Who are a fine people, a good people by the way. But we valued those machines and we valued our Christian institutions, which there's many of and yeah.

Just throw the ball. Have you met the dog?

                            From CNN:

"At least one member of the Palm Beach canvassing board, which hand-counted a segment of voters' ballots over the weekend, said that she had received death threats and was under police protection."

                            Put that phone down George!

You know a lot of people--good people, decent people--ask me things like "Gov'ner, this can't be good for the country and all--counting votes. What about the NASDAQ, or the middle east crisis or terrorists taking advantage"?

I think now is a time for reconciliatorating, nor rancor. We must put people aside and let the machines prevail. Machines and Jim Baker--great guy, cute kids... wife goes to church every day. But even a punch hole machine will tell you if you ask it that values mean more than victory, especially when we're talking about the executivator in chief... it means something to the plain people, the common people who support me. And they supported me as anybody can tell you with a 49% majority and the numbers don't lie, folks. A little something I learned while drilling for oil and making kids smarter with tax incentives.

Those of you worried about NASDAQ--smart people, concerned people--I can assure you that we will continue to send men into space... there's no threat there. Dick and I wipe a tear away whenever we hear they launched another shuttle full of hard-working, decent Americans to orbit the moon.

The middle east? There's decent people there--hardworking people--with pets--on many sides and I'll be sure to meditate between them while in office. Sometimes some plainspeakin'--Texas style--is needed. It might be a case of sitting Mr. Arafat down and saying: "Look. This constant feudin' between you and the Serbs has got to stop! Hell, we bombed 'em silly for you guys for damn near six months and it still ain't workin' out?! Tell your people the sooner they put down the guns, the sooner Indian kids stop throwing rocks at them."

Let me assure you we will get to the bottom of who bombed that ship in Israel. Osama Bid Lauer has nowhere to run, and he must understand that while we're keepin' our powder dry right now, he can hide out in Italy all he wants but we will prevailate over him and those responsible for targeting God-loving, tax-paying marines who have tax breaks of at least $30,000 on average to look forward to.

                              God bless America.
