  • Is Helio Gracie a badarse or what?

I just saw an old interview of him on one of the Gracie videos.. The man does not care who he craps on. He craps on Carlos Jr (?) He says his son Rickson's 400 win record is crap... The man is the shiet.

That's one 90 year old I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alleyway.

He should start Geriatric Jiu-Jitsu, the Retirement home circuit.

Yeah... I've heard similar reports concerning Helio Gracie—the man's ego is bigger than he is. Apparently, he's one of those old champions who considers people of this day and age, pathetic in comparison. In some cases, he is correct. People are slacking off more these days, but pissing on your own son is another thing.

Everything Helio says he has a right to. Old champion? What does that matter? His age is exactly why he is one of the most sought after instructors in this day and age. Because he has seen so much, been around the art for so long...he can pick out the smallest incorrectness in your technique. Your presumption is a bit distasteful. He himself has said that fighters in this era are the best of all time; something a bit different from "pathetic" one might say. Fighters nowadays are large stronger and more skillful than when he fought. But, because he has been around so long he can see things we can't see. That's something to respect and keep in mind before annualizing someone in such a way.

Come on now. I like Helio Gracie and all, but you have to admit the guy is heading up the running for the biggest ego in history. I mean back in the day he thought he could kick anyones ass. That's kinda like when he was talking shit about how he could take out Kimura, and how did that story end???? As far as him dissing on Rickson I think that might be a little jealousy. I have read many peoples thoughts on Rickson's BJJ and just about everyone that has seen him has said he is probably the best example of jiu-jitsu that has ever walked the earth. Whether or not Rickson is the baddest of all the Gracie's I don't know and nor do I want to find out. Our school is affiliated with Rickson and teaches BJJ exactly the way he teaches it. I never diss on Rickson because even if he was no good at BJJ at all he has done more for unifying jiu-jitsu than anyone else has ever done with his assosiation.

Well I think what Helio said was that Ricksons NHB record was at the time i believe 9-0. I heard that Ricksons counts all his street fghts, MMA fights, and Bjj, and sambo tournaments and thats how he got his record. Cause when he lost that Sambo tournament he said its not a loss on his record, so i think he refers to everything he has ever done wether it was judo or whatever. As for Helio, the guy was an ass kicker and did amazing things. He and his brother also started everyone in BJJ from Rorion to the new guy that signs up to Jiu Jitsu today. What I DON'T like is how he ignores the other guys like Renzo and Ralph etc. That kind of annoys me when Helio said he doesnt know much about Renzo, and that he never trained him. Well if anyone of you hve "The Gracie Way" Renzo syays that Helio was an influence and that he learned from him. ALSO rickson is helios son and he was in renzos corner in PRIDE. WHy would Renzo say that and why would it be in the book that ROrion gracie sells off his website. So if anyone can follow me, it just doesnt make sense why Helio says that the only jiu jitsu he endorses is the one from his sons. The only think I can think of, is because Renzos Bjj is more aggressive and not as laid back as Royces, eeh i dont know. I'm Done!

Renzo has a black belt doesn't he? I thought that Heloi said he endorses people with black belts (old school ones like Renzo).

I know that back in Brazil Helio wears a blue belt because he pretty much doesn't respect black belts in JJ if they aren't trained by them. It almost seems like the guy thinks he is the godfather of JJ. I have much respect for Helio but I think he thinks a little to highly of himself. As far as Rickson using all his street fights and all that crap on his record I don't blame him I would count them too. I mean the guy said that he had been in over 400 fights and hadn't lost, he never said professionally. As far as the way they look at the other Gracie's I would have to agree that they are overlooked. There is one of the younger Gracie's which I beleive is Helio's grandson that has a black belt from 2 of the brothers and you never hear about him. As a matter of fact Helio doesn't think it's good enough if you get a black belt from say Rickson. When you take the test he expects you to go to Brazil and test at his school. I mean WTF is that? Does he not trust his own son to train the person right?

                          Hey Mr. Heel Hook,

Take a chill pill, will ya... I'm not dissing on the Old Man. He is the grandmaster of my martial art, after all. I was merely stating the obvious. Helio Gracie is much like grandfathers—they moan and groan about how the world is not what it used to be, how "In my day, we walked several miles to school, etc..."

Get your foot out of your ear, maybe you'll read better.

Aren't all old people that way? LOL. I'll probably be that way when I am old.

I know it's very annoying when my father watches my BJJ. He was a wrestler in high school and college and so he feels as if he can critique my every move. Shoot, he's even talking about my conditioning..... I have been getting up at 4:30 AM every morning this summer to workout. I don't want to hear a word about conditioning!

why didn't he get rid of the colored belt system and do it like yosheikan budo, everybody wears the same blue and white blocked belt ( wider than normal belts, like the red and white belt for a 6th dan judo)

Helio to my knowledge did all his fights in Brazil and a long time ago, the opponent these days are a lot thougher than in his days , so I don't understand why he would diss any BJJ player that still competes

( a reminder, some of you ask of trads that they prove themself now even though they have done so in the past, the last time Helio proved himself must be more than 20 years ago so why does he get the benefit of the doubt?)

As a teacher he might be the world but as a person.......
If these other Gracies had not been there, the Gracie name wouldn't be as big anyway, part of Helio's name is thanks to them
