Gracie's introduction into Jujitsu

First off, excuse my ignorance on the whole Bjj art form but my understanding is that art forms such as Judo and jujitsu has been around for a long time and these art forms are the precursor to Bjj.

So my question would be, what new innovations did the Gracie's bring to jujitsu? Is it that they emphasized grappling or the ground game or is the mere fact that they popularized ground fighting?

Ohhh....thats a long answer and I am too lazy to do it.

To make it muuuuuch shorter...They over all bettered the techniques used. Though many would argue with that I bet, that's how it is seen. Since people seem to like to fight and outdo others on this message board, hopefully someone will give you a longer answer.

My understanding....

Judo is pretty new. Kano the guy who made it took Jiu-Jitsu and made it a sport for all. (It has some wonderful stand-up grappling).

Helio wasn't a big feller. He developed Jiu-Jitsu for the little guy. It has more groundwork than Judo, but it seems as if he took out a lot of the Judo throws.

I take BJJ but I wouldn't mind doing some Judo in supplement.

It's a very long answer indeed, but if you want a full explination on Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Brazilain Jiu Jitsu, buy Mastering Jiu Jitsu by Renzo Gracie. It has one of the best explanations that I've seen so far.

One interesting thing in it is the "fast takedown". Important if you fight against kickboxers.

There are only two things small and light guys can do against bigger and heavier guys: Punch them fast and as often as you can until they are unconscious. That´s streetwise and opens a way to flee. The other more sportive way is, bring them on the ground were they cannont develop the power they have standing because the ground to most people is nothing they are used to. Helio did exactly that, and the ground is the only distance the gracies are really good in.

Here in LA, there's a Jiu Jitsu school on every street corner.

Well, maybe not that many but I just found out there's a new Jiu Jitsu school across the street from work.
I drove by last week and there was a "For Lease" sign on this shop.
Today, a huge sign: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the whole place is matted.

Los Angeles is the Mecca outside of Brazil for Jiu Jitsu schools.

One of my friends was between jobs, had a few weeks to goof off and went to to take the free class offered at every Jiu Jitsu school. He ran out of days before he made it to all the schools.

I actually live in Orange County but Torrance is not that far away. Is there much difference between Merchado's Jiujitsu and Gracie's?

Kano took JUJUTSU, not Jiu-Jitsu and made it Judo.

I can't help but laugh at that. Why, because it is so true. Me, being a GJJ man will obviously say the Gracie school. I have trained with the teathers there several times and can tell you they are simply great. Rener (the younger) and Ryron (the older) run most of the mat time their. They are the eldest brothers of Rorion. Both of them are simply amazing and teach better than anyone else I have ever trained with. I myself like Rener a bit better...he seems to be a tad more aggressive. But, either or I can promise you a very large bang for your buck.

My only advice would be to do what Mr. Hell Hook says! I've never seen Rener, but Ryron came out to Australia recently and taught a seminar at my school - his teaching style is great! Doing techniques far more complex than I'd been taught before, Ryron explained them so clearly that everything seemed simple. So, I can do nothing but recommend him as a great teacher.
