Originally posted by proud chinaman lets just say ghost for streetfighting fighting dirty is better, and wc teaches you to fight dirty real good! look down on wc all you want, but you cant dismiss people that have used it in real fighting.jus cos its your opinion that its crap, doesnt mean everyone should give up whats worked for them or they enjoy doing.
Actually it does.
You should give it up.
Its weak and lame.
Just cos you are striking at agood target does not mean you can damage it.
If you threw a punch at me id block it with my throat.
"Be alert. Be alive in the moment. Don’t imagine anyone who comes and asks you to ‘push’ or ‘spar’ will keep to a format, or even stay barehanded" my ba gua teacher !!
belief in your style is important, but understanding and admitting it's weakness is vital as well. the cage is a steril enviroment. there is enough room to square off and use kickboxing striking and ground work, but no outside obsticales are present. they also have very poor weapon defense. they are exetremly funcational in straight up incounters. tma can be great if trained correctly. they usally lack realistic groundfighting and you need to train for getting hit. the arguement will never end because believing what you train is the best is a natural thing( otherwise your wasting your time) and your surrounded daily in your training by like minded people. i have trained in wc and mt and both are good arts. in mt the learning curve is much much quicker, and you get use to hitting and be ing hit from the start. wc thats longer to develop the sensititvity and to apply the skills. if you spend all your time in wc training chi sao and not combat applications then you'll have trouble reacting when the fight goes down.
no art is better..... if you don't train hard it doesn't matter whether it's mt, wc, bjj , your going to suck. the art can't make a wuss into a warrior.
"we practise the more deadly techniques in forms, when we do chi sau we stop just before the target with these techniques against a resisting opponent"
But you have to be careful, you might end up automaticaly stopping just before the target on a real opponent.
In case you don't beleive me I'll find that quote from the anti grappling thread...
"Several years ago there was a big Shotokan Karate Tournament in France which attracted many high ranked practitioners who fought on an international level. Somehow arguments started and the whole tournament turned in to a big brawl. Funnily enough no one got hurt. The national and international Martial Arts Press asked afterward how it could be that so many high ranking Karate instructors had a fight for real and there were no injuries. The answer was quite simply that these guys were too good at what they were doing. Shotokan Karate conditions you to stop every punch a couple of centimetre in front of the opponent."

When i train in Ba gua or tai chi we often wear body armour for the applications including full head gear. this allows us to apply techniques powerfully. still not full power.
The one time my teacher unloaded a full power strike into my chest i ended up with a badly bruised breast bone! nice!
I heard that a karate semi contact champion got put in hospital by 2 thugs because his punches did not contain much power and they were often pulled completely. his competition training had installed the 'pull your strikes' reaction.
This is mainly a sport reflex though and is not part of the TMA's.
Most TMAs practice full contact with or without armor once the student is good enough.

You should watch out Ghost I think William was insulted by all of our comments about TKD sucking and now he is going on the offensive.
I know the pictures you are talking about but I never said they were of ghost. As far as I remember you had sent me some pictures of a fat disgusting naked man enclosed in a e-mail and the subject stated "PICS OF ME". That was nice of you to send pics but please don't send anymore William.
Man, I noticed that you have "brawling" under arts studied William. I had no idea we could do that so I guess I should go back and put street fighting as an art studied. That would look so good on my profile since I got in my first street fight in '83 and been fighting ever since.
