  • What to show a Karate BB?

A buddy of mine is a 1st Degree BB in Karate. His 2nd degree exam is coming up and he has to show the instuctor an unusual/creative sequence of moves. He suggested that I should him some BJJ. What do you guys think? I have to keep it reasonable simple since we don't have too much time. I was thinking so a combination of collar chokes and arm bars.

This is no troll. I'm completely serious. What should I show this guy that will impress his instuctor? Triangle choke, cloke choke? kimura from the guard? rolling knee-bar? flying arm-bar? cross-choke from the guard?

I should add, he has very little experience with ground fighting.

Try teaching him how to sweep someone from the top into the mount then into an armbar.

Or trying a triangle then flowing into an armbar

        knee bars are good too.

Flying triangle screaming with the top of the lungs:

          "KKKKKIIIIIIAAAAAAAIIIII!!!!!"

If that will not impress the examinators, tell him to quit karate and start training seriously...

You should show something that applies to his discipline... since breaking bricks with a triangle is out of the question... how about a parry to a throw that transitions to an armbar????

                  Rolling KneeBar

Have him do a high side kick that is a feint to get him into takedown distance. Where his butt is slightly pointing toward the guy and his kicking-lead foot is between the opponents feet. Then duck down grabbing the the opponents leg between his legs and take a rolling kneebar.
Oleg did this in one of the UFCs. Without the sidekick.

                    This would be bunkai testing?

If so, you need to look at the kata he'll be doing. The movements will be there for certain techniques. There are limited applications of kata to ground fighting. Mostly throws and some simple joint stuff. Look to your own self defense training in BJJ for the applications. Clock choke and rear chokes work well and fit in place of any knife hand attack. Front collar chokes can work whenver both hands go to hip. Just a mention of what to look for...wish him well!

                    Peace
